The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has spoken: The Artist, The Descendants, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, The Help, Hugo, Midnight in Paris, Moneyball, The Tree of Life and War Horse will compete for the best picture Oscar at the 84th Academy Awards.
Martin Scorsese‘s 3D children’s adventure Hugo led the morning announcement with 11 nominations, including for best picture and for direction.
This year’s Academy Awards nominations were full of surprises! Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close was nominated for Best Picture after failing to win many awards at all critics races.
Melissa McCarthy has been nominated (hell yeah!) for her role in Bridesmaids for Best Supporting Actress. While, Rooney Mara was nominated for Best Actress for her work in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo in a film that received mixed reviews and lukewarm box office.
In the best actor race, Demian Bichir earned a nomination for the little seen independent film A Better Life.
The 84th Academy Awards will be held on Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. ET/ 4. p.m. P.T. Billy Crystal will be the host.
