This is a harsh story. Adrienne Shelly was an indie actress and director. She was murdered in her Greenwich Village apartment by a construction worker who initially told police that he brawled with her when she complained about the noise he was making. This freak strangled her to death, and then hung up her body to make it look like she killed herself. In a courtroom confession yesterday, Diego Pillco of Ecuador told the courtroom that he was actually trying to rob Shelley’s purse when she caught his sleazy ass. So he strangled her with a bedsheet. Pillco got 25 years in prison, presumably followed by a deportation because he’s here illegally. Shelley garnered posthumous critical acclaim for directing “Waitress” with Keri Russell, and was married with a three-year-old daughter. Ugh. Let me say that again, ugh.

What a rotten story. At least this fucker will rot in jail.
how much you want to bet he’s an illegal alien???
I think the more important issue is that he’s here ILLEGALLY. “Illegal aliens–doing jobs that Americans won’t.” Like killing innocent people? Let’s deport that shit back to his own country!
I HEAR STORIES OF THIS TYPE OF THING ALL THE TIME!! WHEN ARE WE GOING TO STOP FEELING BAD FOR THE PEOPLE THAT ARE ILLEGAL AND GET THEM OUT OF OUR COUNTRY!!!!! IF YOU WANT TO COME HERE YOU MUST BE LEGAL!!
I loved “Waitress”. I was so saddened by her death. Who knows what she would have created had she lived? I am so sorry for her family, especially her daughter, who will likely only remember her mother from photos and film. :(
So we have to clothe and feed him for 25 years–he is probably going to be loving prison life where he never has to work again. I loved waitress also and this such a sad, sad story.
Only 25 years for taking a wife/mother/daughter’s life?
Yeah because LEGAL residents never kill anyone. I fail to see what legality has to do with it. People can be evil whether they’re legal or not. Plus who knows if he’d even do the time if deported to his country? He could be walking the streets down there, meanwhile this lady is dead forever.
I’m with you Zekers…25 years is WAY too lenient for his crime.
Well said Spoon. I get so tired of hearing people bitch about what illegal immigrants do and pretend that legal immigrants and american citizens don’t do just as horrible things. I can’t think of one serial killer who was here illegally.
“Waitress” was a fantastic film and I cried while watching the special segments about Adrienne on the DVD. The actors loved her directing style and she was well on her way before her life was cut so brutally short.
Her murderer sounds like a psychopath and Adrienne’s family is struggling to have her remembered for what she did in life instead of the brutal way she died. My heart breaks for them…may Adrienne rest in peace :(
Good.
I don’t often have such a self-righteous attitude towards people sentenced to prison, but this waste of air deserves to think about what he’s done for the rest of his life.
What he did was unthinkable.
When things like this happen to such a wonderful individual, I have my doubts about the existence of order in the universe.
Waitress is a fitting record of her contribution to film and pop culture.

Why did you leave the most important part of this story out? The POS is a criminal alien!! HERE ILLEGALLY!! Yeah, they’re just here for a better life. Too bad they think that includes killing Americans whenever they want…
WTF does his immigration status have to do with the fact that he’s a murderer? It’s irrelevant. The man deserves to spend his life in prison – the only thing worth mentioning is that it’s unfortunate that he can’t be deported THEN sent to prison for 25 years. I’m sure the prison conditions in Ecuador are worse than they are here.
So would you be happier if the state killed him? Are ya feelin’ a little blood lust yourself? Does killing someone who killed someone mean justice? EVOLVE already!!!

to “misc”…
while some debate the “serial killer” classification of this guy, there was at least one illegal immigrant who would qualify.

But I agree with the argument that it doesn’t matter if someone is illegally. The crime is the same. I think the idea is that, if he hadn’t been here (whether thru being caught at the border or thru deportation), Ms. Shelly would still be alive.
They’re pointing out that he’s an illegal alien because, if we enforced our own existing immigration laws, this particular murder NEVER WOULD HAVE HAPPENED. It’s more of a commentary about our effed-up system than the illegal immigrants themselves. Of course legal citizens commit murder too but, personally, I don’t mind paying for the incarceration of home-grown scum as much as illegals because OUR criminals are at least the product of our own society, not the imported dregs of someone else’s.
He should never see the light of day again.
“So would you be happier if the state killed him? Are ya feelin’ a little blood lust yourself? Does killing someone who killed someone mean justice? EVOLVE already!!!”
Yes, that WOULD. Yes it is justice. How can equal reciprocation not be a universal law? What has perverted YOU and made you feel so high and mighty and judgmental to call us knuckle dragging apes who demand more than a ‘tsk tsk you murderer!’ devolved?
Does the thought of him getting out at 45 going back to Ecuador, and living the rest of his life make you feel evolved? Does taking a human life because you were “having a bad day” and living to see another day seem right?
Adrienne Shelly I love you, you were awesome. And so was your film. You deserved so much more. Your child did. Your husband did. And so did your murderer – DEATH.
CHANGE THE LAW!!!!! This punk got 25 years because he PLEA BARGAINED with the D.A. (He confessed to get the bargain). His scumbag court-appointed defense lawyer did his job, of course and so did the D.A. But if you are so outraged at the evil bastard’s light sentence then DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. The state legislature makes the laws and can change it if people rise up and f**king complain and march in the streets in protest. So don’t sit on your comfortable and perceived safe white asses and put candles and flowers at a memorial and think “Oh, this could never happen to me”. “It only happens to other people”. Well check out the James Williams-Shannon Harp case (Seattle, Washington) and multiple that many times over. You have sick motherf**kering mentally ill scum who SHOULD BE LOCKED UP IN A BACKWARD FOREVER instead of being released by you LIBERAL SCUM lawyers, judges, social workers, politicians, etc. to prey on innocent women, men, and children. THANKS LIBERAL SCUM for your so-called Utopian view of the world thrusted down our throats. Whew, glad I got that off my chest!
Laurie,
Interesting that you only mention your desire for people to “evolve already” when you’re discussing those people who want justice for this poor woman who was murdered. Why, I wonder, do you not feel it more important that humans evolve away from such things as vile acts of random, senseless murder? Don’t hurt yourself thinking about the answer to that question, though. Your brain full of unbelievably mixed-up priorities might implode if you actually discovered just how much you’re missing here.
Yea this was definatly a senseless murder, and yea him being illegal has nothing to do with it, and yea he should get over 25 years for what he did. He was just a bad man, just like others here and there….contrarty to some of your beliefs evil people live everywhere. So you say well if he wasnt illegal, this wouldnt have happen….who say? You? You havent got the right to say that. It was her time, sadly, but it was, and i know that she is probalbly doing fine. And yea, he probaly should have gotten longer sentence but, im not too upset about what he got because, now this 19 year old boy has to, after 25 years, return to the place he ran away from, with a large criminal record and that horrible sense of what he did was wrong. i dont care if your the worse serial killer in the world, a life is something you will always carry around. Now he must here her voice whisper in his ear everytime he closes his eyes and basically know that any future that he wanted is gone….punishment enough….no….not for a life….but instead about bitching about what he deserves (im guilty of it too) remember her,not him. he wasnt the important one.
RE: byzinski says: CHANGE THE LAW!!!!! This punk got 25 years because he PLEA BARGAINED with the D.A
I thought they lowered it to manslaughter because, by law, if he could convince the court it was an accident, he would walk free!! By making it manslaughter, it was a given he would do the maximum time available for that crime.
Anyway, this is a tragic story and that this has happened is a terrible indictment on how people believe they have the right to take things from others. It started with her money and ended with her life. It’s really annoying and frustrating that this guy will never really understand the pain and suffering he has caused and may even feel that he is the victim because he is in jail.
I don’t believe in the death penalty because it is either right to kill or it isn’t – you can’t pick and choose something like that but I can understand how, when personally and emotionally involved, someone would want this man dead! That’s why impartial people have to make these decisions otherwise you end up back in the wild west, which wasn’t pleasant if you were on the receiving end of someone’s emotionally charged “justice”.
All I can hope is that Adrienne Shelley’s family and friends soon find even a small amount of peace and happiness in their lives and I am sure they will raise Sophie to be a wonderful and beautiful woman like her mother.
I can’t fucking believe this! I had no idea she was gone! I’ve been living up in Canada for the past 7 years, and am back in NY on a visit. On Facebook a couple of nights ago, I remembered her and decided to see if she was a member. That’s how I learned of this tragedy. I saw her when she first started out, in “The unbelievable truth” and “Trust”. I literally fell in love with her back then. I knew she lived in Lindenhurst (if I remember correctly), and I wasn’t far away in Huntington. I’d hoped maybe one day I’d be lucky enough to run into her. I’m sorry for your loss Andrew and Sophie, and please excuse my profession of my old crush. But I was just so angry when I found out how she died.
Diego, count yourself lucky that you’re being deported after prison. Because, if I ever saw you on the street, I’d punch you in your face so fucking hard it would cave in and you’d be killed instantly in one shot! And believe me, I can actually hit that hard! I can only hope that someone in prison makes you his bitch, and then kills you. You’re a fucking piece of shit, and the world will be much better without you!
Hey all of you, who call the death penalty blood lust, inhumane and whatever rhetoric you want to call it. I too was against the death penalty. Until….my son was murdered and i can tell you, you don’t know what you’re saying, and i can’t explain it they are not feelings of revenge, but there is something just in getting the death penalty for murder, even though I know that will not bring back my son, and most likely after all the appeals will probably never be put to death, there is still something just. And you don’t know what you are talking about. You are all insensitive to the innocent. Where’s their justice, you never speak for them.
