Johnny Depp is seen here at the Alice In Wonderland premiere at the Odeon Leicester Square in London, England on February 25, 2010. Johnny has some celebrating to do, his movie is now the biggest non-summer movie opening ever, passing 2004′s The Passion Of The Christ.
Despite receiving mediocre reviews, Tim Burton‘s version of Alice In Wonderland accumulated $116.3 million domestic and grossed $210.3 million worldwide. Half of the revenue generated was from the Beckham’s outing yesterday.

According to The Wrap, Alice is now the biggest 3D opening of all time and demolished Avatar’s IMAX record, selling out each of the 188 digital 3D outlets. Alice in Wonderland is also the highest grossing non-sequel opening ever.
A rival-studio distribution official commented on why Alice In Wonderland works no matter what, “It’s three simple things: it’s Tim Burton, it’s Johnny Depp and it’s 3D.” I couldn’t say it any better myself.
The star studded cop drama Brooklyn’s Finest opened on Friday also but it only made $13.5 million. Maybe Richard Gere should stick to straight to DVD puppy dramas.
