Amanda Peet And Jenny McCarthy About To Brawl Over Shots

July 11th, 2008 // 23 Comments

This is going to be Brooke Shields vs. Tom Cruise 2008! So, Jenny McCarthy has an autistic son, Evan, whom she believes might have gotten the condition from either too many vaccinations too early or mercury in his shots.

She’s become an advocate for raising awareness in toxins in childhood vaccines. Actress Amanda Peet wholeheartedly disagrees. Needle battle!

Peet tells Cookie magazine (sounds porny) that she feels that parents who don’t give their kids vaccinations are “parasites.” Put your kids down and slapfight!

I was shocked by the amount of misinformation floating around,
particularly in Hollywood,” she says, adding, “Frankly, I feel that parents who don’t vaccinate their children are parasites.”

Peet is also committed to appearing in a PSA on the matter for Every Child By Two, a pro-vaccine organization.

I love when actresses fight. I hope one calls the other “low-rent” and insinuates that their child is ugly.

Drug the kids up. They invented these vaccines for a reason.

How is Jenny gonna feel when her kid gets 1 of these diseases bc she never had them vaccinated? You reap what you sow.

Just remember it has been proven in (boys)not girls(which amanda peet has) that the vaccines can cause autism. Jenny is not saying that all vaccines are bad but she wants the toxins removed(dont blame her there) she is also stating that spacing them further out and not combining the vaccines can prevent this. how hard is it to space the vaccines out? instead of giving 3 in one day give 1 every couple of weeks newbors are at the doctors every couple of weeks anyway. people just gloss over what the reall issue is and just gather what will make a good headline. with an issue this important you should have all the facts from both sides!

stacey, where has it been proven? because everything I’ve read says the exact opposite.

  5. angelchrome | July 11, 2008 at 11:58 am

I think parasites is probably the wrong word, but I’m with Peet on this one. There isn’t enough repeatable/peer reviewed study to conclude that vaccines have a link to autism and the benefit of vaccines far outweighs the risk at the point.

  6. Feisty Girl | July 11, 2008 at 1:13 pm

I’ve read over 13 books and numerous medical reviews and articles on vaccinations after my friend’s child deteriorated rapidly after being vaccinated. I chose to stop vaccinating my daughter and instead boost up her immune system naturally. She’s never had to miss school from being sick. Proper health and nutrition and sanitation is key! People think the profit mongering pharmaceutical companies and the government are looking out for their best interests. They need to think again and do their own research. Vaccines are not all that they are cracked up to be!

It bothers me when “celebrities” try to push their beliefs/views on people. Why don’t they just tell people to research instead of shoving it in our faces all the time and start name-calling anyone who thinks differently than they do. Ugh!

  7. angelchrome | July 11, 2008 at 2:26 pm

Feisty Girl, I agree that it’s inappropriate for celebrities to give medical advice, but I think the problem is that when people do their own research they may fail to get reliable information unless they are familiar with medical science procedure and standards. To date there are no substantiated studies on causal link between vaccine & autism. The dangers posed by diseases like measles are much greater than the thus far unproven possible link between mercury in vaccine & autism. That said, I hope your family continues to enjoy good health.

In my state, your children are not allowed to attend school (with all the other children) unless they have been fully vaccinated. I’m not sure if saying it’s for religious purposes would make a difference or not. But I doubt, the’I read it online’ reason would fly.

  9. jimi | July 12, 2008 at 12:02 am

There’s a risk to everything. Aspirin can kill a person. The benefits we’ve gained from vaccinations FAR outweigh their risks. Vaccines are all they’re cracked up to be. When you consider the sheer number of children that receive them every year, the incidence of side effect is extremely low. Plus, there’s the other side to consider . . . 1 in 500,000 may develop a reaction to hepatitis B vaccine, and won’t necessarily die. However, once infected with hepatitis B, many people die or develop serious side effects from being infected.

Vaccinate naturally? I’d rather get a shot than suffer through a potentially deadly disease process that I may live through but could suffer other permanent damage.

Fact is, vaccines have gotten us to a point where much of what is being vaccinated against doesn’t show up much anymore . . . because of vaccinations!

  10. mk | July 12, 2008 at 3:04 am

My son had a serious reaction to vaccines. He’s doctor agreed and he has not had a vaccine shot since. He developed high fever, was screaming for hours and had his back arched. You would not believe the amount of vaccines they pump into children. They get several shots each time from birth and EVERY TWO MONTHS until they are 2 years and then I think the two month thing ends and goes to yearly or so.

    They are vaccinated for:
    Hepatitis B
    Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV)
    DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, acellular pertussis)
    Hib (meningitis)
    IPV (polio)
    Influenza
    MMR (measles, mumps, rubella)
    Varicella (chickenpox)
    MCV4 (bacterial meningitis)
    Hepatitis A

Jennie is not against vaccines as a previous poster noted. She wants greener vaccines (heavy metals, animal byproducts, human diploid cells from aborted fetal tissue, formaldehyde etc) and for vaccines to spread out.

I’ve asked my mother and grandmother and they never received that many vaccines.

  11. mk | July 12, 2008 at 3:14 am

    Tracy,

you can get an immunization exempt form from your state but you have to find the form online and mail it to the state official. Schools do not provide alternatives so you need to do the research yourself. One of the vaccines given to infants and toddlers is for Hep b.

    Hepatitis B is transmitted through

    direct blood-to-blood contact
    unprotected sex
    unsterile needles

How many 12 month old’s do you know that are having sex or sharing needles?

No evidence at all for an autism/vaccine link? There is an extensive study out of Europe that showed a dramatic drop in Autism rates after thymerisol was removed from the MMR vaccine. A large settlement was just issued by one drug company to parents who were suing because their children contracted autism and were vaccinated.
Aside from that why are we vaccinating for chicken pox and measles. We don’t live in a third world country in squalor with poor hygiene making many of the vaccines obsolete. What you choose to do is your own business, but to put some bubblehead on a national magazine who then starts insulting parents who don’t agree with the drug manufactures is in poor taste.

  15. Barbara | July 13, 2008 at 4:22 pm

The reason for Amanda’s parasite comment is because she feels parents who do not vaccinate their kids are relying on all the kids around them to be vaccinated. If no one around their child is sick then their child can’t get sick either. She feels those of us who vaccinate our children are in essence protecting those who don’t.

  16. Zekers | July 14, 2008 at 6:49 am

    Well said Barbara.

I agree that if harmful chemicals can be removed from the vaccines, then they should be; but, to just not administer the vaccines because of a small percentage of “what if” just seems negligent (and selfish) to me.

  17. M (from Northern Europe) | July 18, 2008 at 3:14 am

Mcfate said: “There is an extensive study out of Europe that showed a dramatic drop in Autism rates after thymerisol was removed from the MMR vaccine.”

    This is totally false!

First of all, MMR has never contained thiomersal.
Second, there have been large increases of autism rates in Denmark, Sweden and other countries after vaccines which contained preservative thiomersal were replaced by thiomersal-free vaccines in 1990s. Autism rates have increased also in Canada and US since 2002 as well. According to the real data one might argue that thiomersal actually protects from autism!!
But that’s not the case either. The rates of autism spectrum disorders have increased due to the changes in diagnostic criteria, diagnostic substitution and greater awareness in society.

My son was six months old when he had a serious stroke and almost died. He began to get ill just days after he was given eight (yes 8) vaccines. Ten days later he had seizures and was admitted to the hospital. I stood by his crib for five terrifying days and watched him stare past me and not recognize me while his brain was dying. That was 17 months ago. His neurologist (at the best rated hospital in the country) does NOT know why he had a stroke. We even traveled to Boston Children’s Hospital (six hours away) and they don’t know why either. Various tests prove he is healthy. My original gut instinct and my INTENSIVE studying the past 17 months point to VACCINE TOXIN OVERLOAD. Listen closely, I didn’t say one vaccine. I said combination and amount! I ALMOST paid for my annual cookie magazine but I’ve changed my mind. I also thought Amanda Peet was fun to watch and enjoyed her style. Now in addition I don’t think she is very smart. I’m sure she would feel different if she went through what I did.

  19. andrea | August 1, 2008 at 5:18 pm

it HAS NOT been proven that vaccines cause autism. There was speculation that mercury in the MMR shot correlated with autism and so they removed it in the early 1990′s. Even after removing mercury, autism is still on the rise.

I too believe the vaccines could be a heck of a lot “greener” as they say. I don’t understand the reasoning for all of the toxins nor animal biproducts that are in them. However, I also believe that vaccinating our children is important, just not many at once and not all within their first 2 years of life.

This is a never ending battle until someone, somewhere PROVES what causes autism. The crap in them obviously is not a good thing not just for autism but for cancer and other tradgic diseases.

  20. neosoulman | August 2, 2008 at 7:08 am

It sounds like the combo if vaccinations, and the mercury/other additives are the culprits here. I am expecting my first child, and am going to look for a pediatrician that will hopefully discuss things with my wife and I, rather than just try to push us around because she’s a doctor. As for the slapfight between these two attractive thought at-best moderately talented actors, I dont see it happening. The respondents provided much more helpful information than the author of the article.

There are many GOOD ways to inform people and bring attention to autism.

Midnight In Chicago does it with their Autism Spectrum Podcasts at http://www.mic.mypodcast.com where people can hear the “Autism and Vaccines: Parts I & II” podcasts.

The podcasts quote sources which may be much more accurate than Ms. McCarthy’s opinion.

MIC also has the “Countdown to Midnight” CD that sends proceeds to reputable autism charities.

Spread the word. It is important we get the FACTS out on autism.

I DONT have time for this sh**!! I care for a 18 yr old son who got autism after a SERIES of shots at 16 months instead of 18 months as required ?? ha(now you should know I have not had his boosters since then) every EDUCATED DOCTOR wont even protest because they KNOW why he is Autistic.. Unfortuatly, nobody would listen in 1990′s… But we know, his doctors know, and I can only say. Peet is an idiot ! She needs to be educated.. shots are fine, IF your child has NO family markers like gasterintestinal issues..etc.. INVESTAGATE< That way YOU decide NOT the big phamas or a doctor that has NO knowledge of vaccines… remember, they only usually know WHAT they are taught in med school… sorry docs!
