‘American Idol’ Shocker: Pia Toscano Eliminated

April 8th, 2011 // 22 Comments

Holy crap! I would have never called this one. Pia Toscano, who seemed as if she was a front runner to win, was eliminated from American Idol on Thursday night, leaving the judges in despair over the audience’s decision. Toscano took it all in with a lot of calm dignity.

“I have no idea what happened here. I’m shocked. I’m angry,” said judge Jennifer Lopez, who had started to cry.

Randy Jackson covered his head and mouthed a repeated “No” after host Ryan Seacrest announced that Toscano she was going home.

Steven Tyler said, “A mistake is one thing, but a lack of passion is unforgivable. Meaning that America didn’t care enough to vote for her, or they assumed that she was going to be safe and didn’t bother to vote.

Toscano found herself in the bottom three with Stefano Langone and Jacob Lusk. When the decision was announced Stefano looked completely floored. Watch the elimination after the jump.

What do you think of last night’s elimination? Who do you think should have gone home? Sound off in the comments.

Pia is absolutely the best singer in the competition! She should not have been voted off, but it happens. I won’t be watching “Idol” for the rest of the season. Pia was the one to watch in our house. I know there are nothing but good things to come her way in the very near future. She has much to look forward to and she’ll be better off without ‘American Idol’. Good luck out there, Pia! We’ll be watching for your album release soon!

Something is amiss here. When things don’t make sense it is because they don’t make sense. To go from Vegas 2:1 betting odds to win and never in B3 to out when every entertainment rag in America called her one of the stars of Rock n’ Roll night? DialIdol, the website that evaluate contestants by the amount of busy signals those using DI software to vote encounter had Pia far and away with the most busy signals (meaning people were voting like mad for her). The problem is that Idol allows “power-texting” (in violation of their own rules) where a single smitten 15 year old girl can send 10,000 votes for Scotty cancelling out thousands of voters for Pia who vote only 10 times each by phone. Tonight, idol jumped the shark. The show will never be taken seriously as a “singing competition” again. I expect a 20% drop in viewership (at least) next week.

Regarding power-texting. Although one fan can power-text thousands of votes, they don’t buy thousands of records – just ask Kris Allen who is now playing state fairs while Adam Lambert was nominated for a Grammy and just finished a sold-out world tour with well over 1 million albums sold world-wide in the middle of a terrible recession.

Pia is easily one of the top 5 singers EVER on this show and probably the most beautiful. To have her go out 9th is just madness. It’s too bad I didn’t have a crystal ball. Vegas was paying 30:1 if you had bet Pia would leave – about what they would pay for a mule with a broken leg to win the Kentucky Derby. Lucky for Pia, I have a feeling she will be easily signed and has a wonderful future ahead in music, tv and Broadway – which is more than I can say for many that were chosen over her.

PIA DOESN’T HAVE TO WIN AMERICAN IDOL TO BE A STAR TAKE A LOOK AT JENNIFER HUDSON THAT BROAD GOT A DAMN OSCAR NOW WHAT OTHER IDOL WINNER CAN SAY THEY GOT AN OSCAR NONE BECAUSE THEY ALL SUCK THE ONES WITH REAL TALENT USUALLY GET ELIMINATED BECAUSE THEY CAN MAKE IT BIG WITHOUT AN AMERICAN IDOL FREE HAND OUT SO PIA NO WORRIES AMERICAN IDOL IS STRICKLY FOR THOSE WHO CANT MAKE IT ON THEIR OWN AND NEED A BOOST

  5. Sandra Clark

I couldn’t believe last nights show! I hate to say bad things about the other is in a contestants (some are quite good, but Pia is definitely in a class of her own. Not only can she sing, but she’s classy and beautiful, What I would term (the complete package). American Idol needs to do something to keep Pia on! I don’t even care to watch any other of the shows. This is an atrosity!, and American idol needs to “fix” this mess. How about another “save”?! It would be the right thing to do.

  6. Andrew Rehl

The majority of votes are casted by young girls who vote for the males on this program. Scotty certainly received a majority pof votes and Pia a minority. Young girls vote for Scotty not before he is a good singer, but because he is cute.

  7. Dave Wallace

The judges are to blame. After weeks of plain vanilla reviews where they love everyone, the fans at home had no “expert” guidance to help with the selection process. Please remove Lopez and Tyler from next year judging.

i was shocked”, she was at the top to win”american idol”. the voting should be left up to the judges each week, with scores that are accumulated each week.pia will get a recording contract from some company definately” in the future. i think amy should have been elimanted, she cannott sing”. we will see what the rest of the season brings.

Pia was the standout best this year. The one that should have gone is the guy who wore the suit with the roses on it two weeks ago ” Sorry can’t remember his name because he’s forgettable” You will continue to have these problems as long as you let the tiny boppers “Girls” vote for the prettiest guy, or the prettiest outfit. They don’t care about the best voice or the most talent. This is not a legitimate talent show or they would’nt let something like that happen. The judges are entirely too nice this year when they comment on performances the people who watch the show are not entirely stupid they can see talent and they also can see no talent. Just a side note, the Idiot who was singing and dancing with no shirt on was horrible and should act his age and retire he had no talent on a supposeded talent show.
Just my opinion. Thank you for giving me a platform to express it.

I WAS VERY DISSAPOINTED YESTERDAY, PIA IS THE WOMAN WHO HAS MORE TALENT AND A VOICE LIKE MARIAH CARRY, THEN ANY OF THOSE OTHER 2 GIRLS. PIA SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN VOTED OFF. B.S.

Congratulations! American Idol … another FIRST!! I have been watching Idol for a few years & NEVER have I heard an audience “BOO” the results during the competition … no matter how much they disagreed with them …. also … the judges were as much to blame as anyone for jumping the gun & SAVING Casey whats-his-name so early in the season. He should have gone home just like the others who were ‘voted’ off! THAT was an unnecessary save …. NOW that it is needed … it is no longer available. Watch the ratings PLUMMET in the older demographic category …. who cares anymore … thought this was a SINGING competition … NOT a teeny boppers ‘which BOY is CUTER’ contest!! Buh BYE!!

It was nuts…there is no way…if this is a singing contest…that either Jacob or Pia should have been in bottom three….Pia and Jacob both have incredible voices…I mean come on people…compare them to Paul….Stefano (love Stefano…but no as good), James (ok…but not as good)…Just give us a break…this is becoming a popularity contest and not a singing contest…For the last few years Idol has missed the mark badly…perhaps the biggest travesty…when Adam lost to Kris…we all know who killed it every night that year…and he is an amazing singer and performer…huge success last year…No worries…Lately those who do not win do better…Record companies are literally fall over themeselves, or should be, for Pia…She is the complete package…great voice…and strikingly beautiful….

Last night’s elimination of Pia is a travesty. I have been a faithful viewer of this show for the last 4 seasons. Now due to this elimination I will no longer watch the show. The “American Idol producers” BETTER PAY CAREFUL ATTENTION to this one. What happened last night is history repeating itself for this type of show. The voting structure is painfully bad. Viewers SHOULD NOT be allowed to vote multiple times (I think the web site states a max of 50 votes) and the judges need to be allowed a major vote. The “judges save” is a good tool but should be used more, especially in cases like this elimination. Look at the reaction of the studio audience and the judges last night! What a horror that was! Additionally adding help from music producers this year was a great idea. It definely improved the performances this season. Perhaps they should also have brought in choreographers to help with the “body moves” for the contestants. Maybe this would have helped Pia?

Pia was clearly a “front runner” and should have at least have made it to the top 5.

This is not a true talent show and I so disappointed that Pia was voted off. I will no longer be watching American Idol but will wait and watch for Pia to rise on the charts with the many other talented artists.

I am so disappointed in the voting results of last night. Pia should have been in the top two or three. I do not blame the judges – they are great. However, I think they saved Casey and should have waited for such a time as last night. Pia will go on and be a star. I cried last night and swore I was through watching American Idol (out of anger) but I will go on and support my next favorite singer. I am 63 years old and have loved music all my life — Pia was an inspirition. The thing I am most shocked by was Haley’s reaction. All Pia’s fellow contestants were sad and even weepy but Haley smiled several times and that was so inappropriate. I hope I misread that but I rewound it several times and the people that were watching it with me agreed. That made me very sad.

Season 8 revisted – that’s all!!! Where is Kris Allen these days? I bet Pia will be making millions in a couple of years! Just look at Adam Lambert these days!

  17. John Stoutley

I hope Pia is reading some of these comments, and realizes that all of America who voted, got it wrong. If we Canadians had a change to vote, 30 million would have voted for her alone. As for saying she’s no musician (yes, someone actually said that), she will outlast any of the other competitors in this quickly becoming crass show, and she will succeed around the world. Good luck to you, Pia. Americans don’t know talent when they see it. There needs to be a completely different voting system, where the judges vote represents 50% of the votes. Pia, if you get to read this, know that there are millions outraged by this decision to eliminate you and we want you to show the American public that you can make it anywhere in the world. Go get ‘em, Pia. We love you.

    • Former Idol Fan

John is right. We Canadians are blocked from voting on Idol. If other “international” locations are big viewers perhaps they should be allowed to vote too? We all follow the show too and consume the same products provided by the show’s sponsors.

Alas I don’t think the producers of Idol will do anything about Pia’s elimination. If they do then I will admire them for biting the bullet and fixing the problem. But, I don’t think that will happen. They will probably to continue to live with in their own current rules.

I wish Pia all the success she rightly deserves! I look forward to hearing her music in her future profession as an entertainer. I will buying her first Album.

I have watched Idol since the first show of the first season. From this point on I’ll never watch another and it would be nice if everyone else did the same thing. However, that’s never going to happen. Idol started it’s downhill slide when Simon left. He was the only judge who honestly critiqued the contestants. This bunch (the judges) never have anything bad to say about anybody. Pia was idol material in all ways. She was extremely talented, extremely beautiful, extremely built and even had the name of an idol. Randy needs to go because he has trouble with the English language, Steven has done one drug too many and Jennifer is a Paula wannabe. America definitely wouldn’t know what talent was if it been them in the butt.
