Local Chicago WTTW series Check, Please! recovered an episode in which a then state senator Barack Obama
appeared. The show featured four diners who stopped by at local
restaurants and then gave their two cents about their dining
experiences.
President elect
Obama chats on the show about his meals at Dixie Kitchen and Bait Shop.
The politician espouses his enthusiasm for peach cobbler and corncakes
at the Dixie Kitchen, which Barack admits isn’t “gourmet cuisine.”
But Barack isn’t some fancy-pants politician looking for a “fancy
presentation or extraordinarily subtle flavors.” No, he’s a man of the
people, who wants to be able to go out to eat at an establishment that
wouldn’t necessarily frown upon a man whose decided to loosen his belt
buckle after inhaling copious amounts of Johnnycakes drenched in
butter.
And when you think about it, isn’t that the American dream?
