Beauty Buzz: The Saga Continues For Those Skinny Models

September 19th, 2006 // 6 Comments

Last week Madrid’s Fashion Week caused quite a stir with its ban of skinny models. Those models that had a BMI of less than 18 were turned away from its runways. Could London’s Fashion Week be doing the same thing? I wonder how many models they will turn away. If they’re not allowed to work, how will they earn money to buy food? Well, ice chips and vodka are usually readily available to anyone beautiful or famous, so I am sure these ladies will survive!

According to Shoppingblog.com just before London Fashion Week began, a British Cabinet minister called for Britain to join Madrid in banning too-skinny models from upcoming runway shows. The British Fashion Council, which runs Fashion Week, said in a statement that it “does not comment or interfere in the aesthetic of any designer’s show.” The BFC canceled the photo call on Sunday because it was unwilling to add any more momentum to the publicity surrounding this complicated issue. So far the proposed ban has been completely ignored by the designers showing in London. Meanwhile, designers in Milan are keeping a close eye on the situation to see whether they will be subjected the spiteful and unjust Madrid Protocol which bans anorexic models.

This is so farking dumb. They’re models! They’re supposed to be skinny! You don’t fire a brain surgeon for being too smart.

Also, fashion models don’t give young girls anorexia/bulimia. That is often caused by stress, abuse, depression and a myriad of other ailments…

mutterhal- models are supposed to be THIN, not staving to death. I’m sorry but young girls love fashion and DO read the mags and look online. People should not be paid to continue thier eating disorder. That’s called enabling. Healthy bodies should be shown wearing all the pretty clothes.

BTW- Check out the model Snejana Onopka on http://www.urbanaddiction.com/archives/000890.html

I have to agree with Me. It’s ok to be a model and have the envious lanky figure that most of them have. It’s not ok to starve yourself. I think it’s great that Spain started this and that they promote the use of healthy models. By the way, they measured them using the BMI (body mass index), a combination of height and weight.

Mutterhals, being too smart is a good thing. Being anorexic is not. There is no comparing the two.

  4. I prefer Stella with her clothes on! Models are the people who can look healthy whilst being seriously unhealthy.

Seriously mutterhals have you even WATCHED at least one of the shows in pasarela Cibeles? The models are by no means fat, they are just thin in a healthy way… I was here and must say it was nice to see some real breasts instead of bones jutting out. For example, before this any designer had to cut at least 15cm from the waist of a size 34 skirt to make sure the clothes FIT the model, now normal sizes can be used… thank god! Furthermore proana and promia communities use photos of these models to get what they call THINSPIRATION. So do explain how “fashion models don’t give young girls anorexia / bulimia”. Are you living under a rock or just stupid?

I’m happy about the decision by Madrid too. I think it’s terrible how women of all ages strive to look this thin. My sister just finished basic training for the Air Force and so many of the girls who were in their teens and early twenties had to be put on eating regimends because they were so underweight and unhealthy. Whether you want to believe it or not mutterhals, the fashion industry and it’s “grossly thin” model’s do inspire and influence not only young women, but women in general who feel inferior if there is an ounce of fat on them. Cheers to Madrid…may the rest of the fashion industry wake up and realize that women who actually purchase their clothes are not all size 0,1, and 2. The fashion industry needs to be smarter; lets hope this is a trend that sticks…to their bones maybe?
