Is Mel Gibson under the impression that counseling Britney Spears is some kind of mission from Jesus to make up for being a loony bigot? Gibson and Spears met up last night for a two and a half hour “ongoing guidance session” at the Beverly Hills Cigar Club. Ugh, I hate the smell of cigars and can only smoke one when I’m half in the bag! And no, that doesn’t mean all the time!

Britney and Mel have been regular buddies since dining together last March. Britney even vacationed with Mel and his wife Robin at their home in Costa Rica last month. They used to live in the same gated community.

I don’t get the vibe that they’re tagging each other, though. I think Mel is a wackjob who has taken it upon himself to rehabilitate the crazy hillbilly and shower her in the blood of the lamb. She needs to stick with the meds, and the focusing on work and letting Dad run things. The last thing she needs is religious fanaticism. Look what happened to Stephen Baldwin!

Britney showed up for the date with her hair up in a white headband and capris. She was accompanied by her assistant Brett and a bodyguard. Mel arrived alone, bearing a man purse. It probably contained God’s plan for her.

“Britney looked like a doll with bright red lipstick,” said a photographer, who described her as “very quiet” and “with a serious look on her face as she walked in to the Havana Club.”

The Beverly Hill Cigar club is frequented by celebs like Ben Affleck, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone and Danny DeVito. Britney left around 9:30 and Mel stayed until 11. No word on whether she smoked a cigar or not. She might have rolled a Slim Jim blunt and smoked that.
