I’d rather caption the baby: Man! I’m hungry, look at those boobs!
jesse d | June 6, 2007 at 12:04 pm
What an adorable baby.
dina | June 6, 2007 at 12:14 pm
That’s a bit much. I have no problem with women discreetly breastfeeding (emphasis on discreetly) in public, but she’s not being the least bit discreet, PLUS she KNOWS she is followed around by papparazzi, so I have to question what the hell she was thinking.
Maynards | June 6, 2007 at 12:18 pm
she reminds me so much of an early angelina ! her acting is so-so, but she gets press by being completely outrageous.
Shasta | June 6, 2007 at 12:22 pm
I mean no disrespect to breastfeeding mothers, but for pete’s sake please cover it up. I close my mouth when I’m chewing for your sake, cover up your baby-feeding booby for mine, PLEASE!
Gyllenhaaliac | June 6, 2007 at 12:30 pm
I’d do it if she were her brother.
TJ | June 6, 2007 at 12:35 pm
As a former breastfeeding Mom I have to say – OUCH! That is SO not how you feed your child! I’m in pain just looking at that picture.
ursula | June 6, 2007 at 12:41 pm
Don’t hate. I think she looks perfectly lovely and her baby is well-fed. There’s nothing obscene about it. And who knows where she is, maybe she’s sitting on her friend’s front porch.
conrad | June 6, 2007 at 12:46 pm
I am sure plenty of women find this beautiful, but thats a beauty that needs to be shared between mother and child in a quiet, discreet location. She had to know 1 million plus ASL readers would be viewing this spectacle. I never had much of an opinion of her, but now I know she’s an animal. It reminds of that childhood question – “what’s grosser than gross…”
Sarah | June 6, 2007 at 12:50 pm
I have absolutely no problem with breastfeeding in public. There is NOTHING wrong with it……but c’mon! There are proper ways of doing it…and this is not the way. I’ve never liked this woman & this just cements it!
Kelly Rummelhart | June 6, 2007 at 12:52 pm
I agree with the other breastfeeding mom- OUCH!!! La Leche League is proud that she’s breastfeeding but that’s not a proper Latch technique! :)
jrxblue | June 6, 2007 at 12:53 pm
Gross. That’s why I’m never having kids!
jm | June 6, 2007 at 12:58 pm
get over it!!! this is the primary function of breasts and its a sad, sad thing when something totally normal is sexualized by others. this is one of the few countries with such a puritanical attitude about breast feeding. also, get over the whole ‘beatiful moment’ thing. breast feeding is healthy for the mom and baby and should not be relegated to dark corners just to make you comfortable or help you maintain your illusions.
BabyBearsMummy | June 6, 2007 at 1:00 pm
It is wonderful to see a hollywood mumma breastfeeding and not feel that they need to hide the fact that they are giveing the best they have to offer. We dont cover our heads when we eat so why would we expect our children to. This photo is truely beautiful even if the babys latch is probibly causing the mummy pain.
nolamama | June 6, 2007 at 1:02 pm
It’s possible that she was being discreet (not blanket over the kid’s head, but I’ve never known a baby to put up with that anyway), but maybe the baby just sat up and/or pulled her shirt aside. Or maybe she just knows now what her funbags are really for and doesn’t give a rats ass who sees them. Babies have to eat, and if they are eating breastmilk then mom’s have to be able to feed them whenever and wherever necessary. Big whoop.
Jam | June 6, 2007 at 1:16 pm
I have mixed feelings about breast feeding in public. It’s natural, we shouldn’t be disgusted by it-BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT- for some reason-whenever i see ladies doing this in public-i get a tad uncomfortable-maybe i lack the motherly instinct?
sasha | June 6, 2007 at 1:18 pm
that is not how you breastfeed a baby i have never done it but i assume the millions of women ver thousands of years doing it in a certain position must be for a certain reason not baby sitting uprigt.
I think the only problem we have with breasfeeding is a breast and it goes backt o women need to cover themselves men cannot control themselves it is uncouth. Get over you fucking self and live i n Alabama or somethinh
Go for her for not having a nanny.
alayna | June 6, 2007 at 1:20 pm
What the hell? did no one show her.how to hold the baby when you breastfeed?! Jebus.
Meep | June 6, 2007 at 1:41 pm
It’s wonderful to see a mama doing what’s best for her child. Good for her for not hiding it from all the repressed, self-righteous people out there who believe what society is telling them – that breast should only be a sexual thing. As for the latch issue that several other commenters have brought up – just look at the baby. She looks happy, healthy, and sleepy. In fact, she looks (position, latch and all) exactly how my son does when he’s falling asleep. Good for you, Miss Gyllenhaal!
Betheny | June 6, 2007 at 1:41 pm
OMG that’s her BREAST! Who invented this system? Don’t they know breasts are naughty? She should be publicly stoned for displaying her breast! That baby is some kind of pervert!
Oh wait. Maybe he’s not perverted, but all the people that get offended by a baby eating are.
Re his “latch”: His belly is full and he’s detaching reluctantly. That’s what they do. Haven’t you heard that big “slurp” when a baby is done nursing? If they had room they’d nurse all day. They like it.
bklynmom | June 6, 2007 at 1:43 pm
I thought ASL readers were better schooled on papparazzi techniques! She was probably sitting the baby up, just pulling her OFF of her boob, and THAT’s the photo that the photographer chose to circulate. There’s probably fifty more before that and fifty more after that, where her boob isn’t in full view and, therefore, it’s not as… erm… tittilating to the general public. Leave the poor girl alone!
surlymonkey | June 6, 2007 at 2:06 pm
bad latch! someone needs to take a breastfeeding class…OUCH!
FAKE McFAKESTER | June 6, 2007 at 2:13 pm
that pic looks like a fake
What Betheny | June 6, 2007 at 2:23 pm
Gross. I like her, but this picture is gross. There are more private ways to breastfeed your baby in this country. We’re not living in Africa. I can’t stand the self-righteous breastfeeding moms who just show absolutely everything without thinking for one minute that just maybe not everyone is comfortable with seeing their body parts and their child sucking off of them. It’s a personal bond between you and your baby, so make if personal.
Kim | June 6, 2007 at 2:53 pm
I agree with FAKE McFAKESTER, that picture is totally fake.
tunaskroodle | June 6, 2007 at 3:00 pm
still a cute picture.
shell | June 6, 2007 at 3:25 pm
Something does look fishy about this pic… That said, I doubt she knew that her boob was showing and the baby was probably just sitting up and finishing nursing. It happens if you breastfeed past 6 months, which I have done with 3 babies. Also, the paps probably hate Maggie b/c she hates them. I think the mutual hatefest will continue after this.
Rachel | June 6, 2007 at 3:26 pm
Cute kid, nice mom. I think it’s great that she’s so relaxed. If breastfeeding makes you uncomfortable then don’t look!
That would be a bad latch if it were a young baby but if she’s comfortable then who cares. My daughter would do that when she was trying to get more milk — it seemed to help with letdown.
What Rachel | June 6, 2007 at 3:36 pm
That’s the point… We don’t seem to have the option NOT to look when women do this.
jesse d | June 6, 2007 at 3:37 pm
OH SHIT DUCK N COVER it’s the BREAST NAZI’S – I don’t know who’s worse – the ones b*tchin about her “technique” or the ones b*tchin because they’re uncomfortable with the uncovered female form. GROW UP PEOPLE – not everyone is like *you*. Don’t look if you don’t like it.
Ruby Vino | June 6, 2007 at 4:07 pm
I agree with jm and appear to be the only one, which is quite sad. Boobs are for feeding babies, period. Women have these deposits of fat and tissue on their chests solely for the purpose of creating milk; not so guys can rub one out. It drives me crazy when people freak about seeing boobs or butts! Butt cheeks are just where your legs come together! Get over it indeed. Only in America do you see these kinds of comments about our bodies.
tom | June 6, 2007 at 4:28 pm
People who have a problem with a mother breastfeeding her child are people I’d like to bury alive. If you feel that way, you should know you’re an asshole.
green cardigan | June 6, 2007 at 4:40 pm
This photo is very invasive. Just an example of the paparazzi going over the line. THey know this kind of photo will generate interest, so they lurked till they get the perfect shot.
I feel sorry for her. I’m sure she had no idea the photo was being taken. It will probably be upsetting for her.
Pepper | June 6, 2007 at 5:00 pm
“That’s the point… We don’t seem to have the option NOT to look when women do this.”
Very true, Rachel. Remember, these moms WANT you to look at them. Don’t let the tit-nazi arguments fool you! The whole breasfeeding in public thing is for attention. If it really had anything to do with what is best for the baby, these moms would have no problem using a breast pump and a bottle. But they want the attention and the satisfaction that comes with having an excuse to ignore public decency laws.
“Boobs are for feeding babies, period”
Wow. That’s imaginative. What a fulfilling sex life you must have.
genevieve83 | June 6, 2007 at 7:25 pm
Pepper, one of the purposes of breast feeding is for the baby to hear the mother’s heartbeat. A pump is a poor excuse for the mother when she clearly can nurse.
As far as the sexlife comment – grow up, for pete’s sake. not everything in this world revolves around “fulfilling” sexlives. Breasts aren’t for sex, whether you like it or not. They’re for feeding children. End of story.
isa_soo | June 6, 2007 at 9:12 pm
For those of you worried about bad latch, you should see my son doing downward dog while nursing.
Yeah Maggie!
denis | June 6, 2007 at 9:41 pm
“How do I get that guy sitting next to me latched on to my right boob?
Pepper | June 6, 2007 at 11:24 pm
Genevieve, yes, the breast’s primary biological function is for feeding children. Nobody is arguing that. But they also have their purpose in human sexuality. What I have a problem with is people who squawk about how breasts can ONLY function as a feeding station for babies and any other purpose they serve is just dirty and naughty and just plain not good enough.
And, yes, not everything in the world has to revolve around sex, I agree. Know what? Not everything in the world has to revolve around children either.
indoorvoice | June 7, 2007 at 12:16 am

Photo: Maggie Gyllenhaal filming a scene from the prequel to Secretary.
Tonya | June 7, 2007 at 12:15 pm
A mother feeding her child is not offensive to me at all. I will tell you what IS offensive, little skanks walking around with their asses hanging out, thongs showing, etc…
Ava | June 7, 2007 at 6:06 pm
Gyllenhaal: “As far as babies go, this one totally SUCKS!”
Mizz Thang | June 7, 2007 at 8:45 pm
It’s funny how so many of you are missing the boat: Maggie isn’t dumb, unaware, or being offensive on purpose. She is showing the paps (and those of you whiny, skittish, prude American brats who just don’t get that breasts’ primary function are for feeding children!) that it’s natural, she’s gonna do it, and if you don’t like it, don’t look!
Tonya | June 7, 2007 at 10:05 pm
Oh, for those who are saying that she is breastfeeding “correctly”, it appears to me that the baby WAS layimg down and this picture was taken as she was sitting him up. After breastfeeding 4 of my own kids, I know that the little suckers don’t like to let go!
Lexie | June 9, 2007 at 1:32 am
i think it’s beautiful that she dont give a flying frick if she’s in public or not. .feeding your child is a beautiful thing.. i think all the moms that try to attack breastfeeding moms with their own prudish outlook on the situation, they are just bitter because they bottle fed and they’have to find something to feel good about themselves for.
cz | June 10, 2007 at 9:54 pm
HA HA. Boobs are fun. fun to look at, fun to have. Babies like them and need them. Anyone who has a problem with babies nursing and is “uncomfortable” with seeing it IS FULL OF SHI! You’re just mad cause you don’t get to show off your pair. HA HA suckers.
T | June 17, 2007 at 11:02 am
Ugh! Female form, eh? Maggie is a saggy woman whose saggy, crusty tits I don’t want to see. Just like I wouldn’t want to see some man’s crusty ball sack. Put your junk up please. It’s not that I think it’s perverted, it’s simply unattractive. I don’t want to see Britney’s coochie although I understand it’s a natural part of the “female form”. LOL. That’s beyond silly to me to use that as an excuse.
I breastfed my second child while I bottle fed the first. I’m much closer to my first child and we have a wonderful bond that I unfortunately cannot find with my breastfed child, so that nonsense about the bond is just that, nonsense. My bottlefed child is much healthier also.
Put your titties back up girls. Nobody but you thinks they’re wonderful, magical tools of empowerment. While you are correct that they are for feeding babies you’re sadly mistaken when you think we should all be fascinated by the glory of the teat. There is no glory or magical beauty. It’s just a tit, it’s just milk. I don’t want to see your “natural tittie” nor do I want to see your “natural vagina” from whence your “natural baby” came. Get over yourselves.
Jenn | June 17, 2007 at 7:37 pm
I’m a breastfeeding mommy…this is VERY typical for us, as odd as it may look. That comment about “that’s not how to breastfeed a baby” is ridiculous…there are many ways and that’s never been painful for me! You know celebs are walking around showing their underwearless crotches and stuff that I don’t really want to see…though it’s a nice thought to be discreet,it’s not always practical…I know my son can be very forceful and when it comes down to making sure my son’s not hungry or take a chance of some person I don’t know being turned off, I’m going to pick my kid!
Good for her!
Valerie | June 18, 2007 at 11:46 pm
That pic is photoshopped…
