Catherine Hardwicke Not Directing ‘Twilight’ Sequel

December 7th, 2008 // 8 Comments

The director of Stephenie Meyer‘s film adaptation of Twilight will not be at the helm of the sequel. Catherine Hardwicke revealed, “I am sorry that due to timing I will not have the opportunity to direct New Moon.”

Hardwicke’s exit from the project comes amidst rumors of discord between the director and production company Summit Entertainment despite the movie’s record-breaking box office returns.

The gist of the rift is that Summit was keen to rush out a follow-up to the big screen while Catherine requested more time to develop the story, which will rely heavily on CGI effects.

It’s a shame Summit and Hardwicke don’t appear to be getting along as swimmingly as its stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson are…allegedly.

Catherine Hardwicke, the director of the first "Twilight" movie, was what one might charitably describe as less-than-wowed by the first five scripts she read for the film. "Every one of those scripts (did what a Hoover does)," she told Vulture.

I’m kind of glad. Although I did enjoy the movie, I thought it had the potential of being so much better. Obviously, budget constraints are a part of it, but that wasn’t the only problem. I have new hope for New Moon.

I just seen the movie “Twilight” it was’nt bad, but it could have gone deeper into Edward-Bella’s relationship and had better dialogue, I do feel like Twilight was rushed, and am hoping that NEW MOON isnt so rushed, but it was good overall.

Twilight the movie has nothing to do with Twilight the series. It’s an adaptation of Twilight the book.

    heh…

I liked Catherine’s interpretation of the story. There were some awkward points in the script and direction, but I figured with more money and time for New Moon that could be worked out. Hopefully, Summit doesn’t rush it too much and ruin a great story. And here’s to hoping they don’t hire someone like Brett Ratner (I’m still bitter about him killing the X-men series).

The director of Thirteen couldn’t even make this mess of a story interesting so just imagining what a rushed, CGI sequel is going to be like… I can hear the fangirls crying already.

I think Catherine Hardwicke is an amazing director, however, I think she slightly missed the spot for some fans when directing Twilight. I really hope Chris Weitz or whoever the new director is at least has SOME experience of capturing expressions in faces on film!!! I agree that Twilight could have been much better, but I guess that won’t stop me from buying the DVD when it comes out!
