China’s Little Ashlee Simpson

August 12th, 2008 // 17 Comments

This is so messed up. Did you guys watch the opening ceremony for the Olympics in China? Well, the adorable little Chinese girl who sang “Ode to the Motherland” as part of the elaborate performance was actually the more “photogenic” choice of performer.

Basically, a director of the opening ceremony explained to the media that having a prettier girl lip-sync to the voice of what was believed to be a less cute girl who could actually sing was “for the national interest.”

Wow. So, nine-year-old Lin Miaoke is getting credit for singing when it was really 7-year-old Yang Peiyi. I can’t understand how she wasn’t cute enough. Does she have horns, or something? Not that I have anything against people with horns, but yeah, that would be distracting. Or guns for hands–that’s both distracting and dangerous.

“guns for hands” What a crack up!! Too funny! But I totally agree.

this is pretty lame and incredibly superficial of them.

however, this happens ALL the time in bollywood/tollywood films.
the beautiful actors/actress lip-synch the songs. usually the “real” singers are much older and quite often not attractive.

its really not fair and its horrible for them to do that.

Whatever, America does that all the time, you guys need to calm down.

In this instance, the only difference between our culture and their culture is they were pretty blunt about it. Here, the director would just come up with billion excuses.

My only hope is that no one ever tells this innocent, darling, 7-year-old child that an entire government body decided she wasn’t cute enough to display to the world.

That’s typical showbiz. Although IMO, one girl is as cute as the other one.

They said it was because the girl who sang the song was buck toothed. Very shallow and sad move since this will be recorded in these girls’ history FOREVER.

China has always been more concerned with what “others” think, than what’s right. I’m just sayin……….

  12. Steven | August 13, 2008 at 12:15 pm

OK, this is just becoming pathetic…..the little girl singing was fake (which was totally obvious), the “firework footprint” display was a digital mock up, what are we going to discover next, that the precision lighted drumming countdown was actually controlled by the stage manager?

I thought the opening ceremonies were amazing, now I’m starting to wonder what extent China went to in order to “show off” to the world and put on the most elaborate opening ceremonies to date…….

Uh, yeah like America isn’t hung up on looks. Puh-leeze!

Oh, come on – how can any of this be shocking?

This is the only truly evil major government left on the planet Earth. They have thousands of employees who just revise Chinese current events every day. This kind of deception is nothing for them…

    they look like little sluts

This is not the same type of situation because everyone (in India) watching the movies knows it’s not the actors/actresses singing, that it is in fact a handful of older singers who are also loved and admired for their craft. No deception.

I feel sorry for the little girl. They really shouldn’t have replaced her. For the fireworks, I can’t blame you for hearing conflicting information because 90% of news stations never mentioned they were pre-recorded and that the fireworks took place that night (they just showed the pre-recorded one). I guess people will do anything to rip apart the opening ceremony.
