Coldplay Might Have Have Ripped Someone Off

June 17th, 2008 // 28 Comments

So has photo-allergic Chris Martin been snarling around with known plagarist Avril Lavigne and getting ideas? Andrew Hoepfner is the frontman for Brooklyn-based indie band The Creaky Boards. He posted this video on YouTube claiming that Coldplay appears to have stolen the melody for their new single “Vida La Vida” from their song (which is seriously called) “The Songs I Didn’t Write.” What a frightening coincidence!

In the video, Hoepfner juxtaposes the two songs with subtitles explaining that the band thought Chris Martin was in the audience when they performed the ditty at the CMJ Music Festival in October of 2007.

“We were flattered when we thought we spotted Chris Martin in the crowd
that night. He seemed pretty into it! …Maybe TOO into it,” Hoepfner wrote. Blame Gwyneth!

A rep for Coldplay claims that the band cut a demo for “Vida La Vida” in March of 2007 and that Martin was recording in London in October so he couldn’t have been at the CMJ Festival.

I’m not kidding. Gwyneth Paltrow’s fingerprints are all over this mess. She wants to keep that Coldplay money funneling in. She put on her husband wig, got her tape recorder and took in a Creaky Boards show. Didn’t she dress up as a man in Shakespeare in Love and win an Oscar for her drag king schtick? Right.

Of course it’s a rip off. Chris and Gwyneth are copycats! Chris copies Bono and U2. Gwyneth copies Grace Kelly/Madonna. It’s time for these two to go! What happened with their childhoods? Were their parents not suitable role models to idolize? Like most of us, the anser is a resounding NO!

  2. soren | June 17, 2008 at 11:24 am

Clearly Chris Martin ripped off the Creaky Boards. Sadly, the original song is so much better than Coldplay’s cheesy copy. Sue hipsters sue.

Am I the only one who hates Coldplay? I seriously don’t get the big deal about them.

  4. mf | June 17, 2008 at 11:31 am

chris martin is a dick. plain and simple.
    no…add talentless dick.
    oh and sociopathic egomaniac dick.

  5. Prenktix | June 17, 2008 at 11:36 am

mf couldn’t have said it any better. I loathe Chris Martin. I’m sure he looks in the mirror everyday, smirking, winking and giving himself the “Who Loves Ya Baby” finger-point.

  6. Ashley | June 17, 2008 at 11:38 am

Both suck but clearly Mr. Paltrow ripped them off. I used to like Coldplay when they first came off (I thought he sounded like Thom Yorke), but now they’re annoying twats. Any guy that marrys Gwenyth Paltrow and boasts that his musical influnece is Justin Timberlake(!!!) is obviously a twat.

Coldplay have ripped off awesome Phantom Planet’s song called California and made it it pretty bad.

  8. Le Roi Est Mort | June 17, 2008 at 12:18 pm

Not to mention Coldplay’s “Talk” and Kraftwerk’s “Computer Love” from 1981!

Viva Lad Diva was a Eurovision Israeli song like 10 years ago, seriously – check it out

    Prenktix ……LOL.

That sums up everything that needs to be said about Chris Martin !

  11. Morgan | June 17, 2008 at 1:21 pm

Coldplay bites. They rip off a much more interesting band, Travis. And I agree with everyone above that this precisely the kind of stuff that talentless hacks like them cobble together, and that record companies, sadly, get behind.

  12. Janepitt | June 17, 2008 at 5:29 pm

It would be great if both Martin and Gwyneth disappear. I hope this band sues their ass. Watching this pretentious little fuck makes me angry. I hate that I was tricked into buying their first CD.

  13. Scott | June 17, 2008 at 6:37 pm

Do you know how I know Chris Martin is gay……he rips off songs!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe that’s because boring songs all sound the same.

The old jealousy statement, quoted by every moron who doesn’t have anything original to say. Coldplay sucks period, mediocre musicians and a lead singer, if you can call him that, with a voice that’s whinier than his whiney wife’s. They could never make music as profound as U2, because they lack the talent.

Why do people have to hate on others who become successful? Yes, there are some similarities between the two songs. But, I don’t believe Chris Martin ripped that guys song off. It’s possible that two people can write two different songs that might sound alike. Remember, nothing is new under the sun. The opening melody of the verse is the only thing that resembles the other bands song. It’s a phenomenon that can happen in this world. And, for the ignorant haters out there. Yes, the new album does sound like U2. The new album was produced by Brian Eno. U2′s legendary producer. So, yes the colors and sounds are very close to U2. Is that a bad thing? No! It just makes them a significant band in this world that can be an agent of change. So, everyone needs to chill out over Chris Martin and Gwyneth. Stop trying to pull them down. They are doing their part in this world just like everyone else. Chill out before they buy you and make you clean their toilets. Because that’s what happens to those who can not rejoice with others and their success.

    Creaky Boards are Hypocrites:
Easy to claim that Coldplay copied them
The fact is that Creaky Boards copied themselves, (and not from zelda as they said), but from Joey Satriani, check this out:
    http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=1ofFw9DKu_I
Release date was in the beginning of 2004, long enough for Creaky Boards to copy it.

So people judge Creepy Boards for wanting to make money out of something they didn’t even write themselves

  27. Andrew | July 2, 2008 at 9:11 am

actually it is closest to a david broza (israeli singer songwriter) song called sigaliot which was a big hit and a great song

  28. Raymond Morgan | October 14, 2008 at 10:45 pm

Creaky Boards might have a claim, but it sounds a bit outlandish if you ask me.

    As for copying Computer Love???
Obviously the person claiming that Chris Martin “ripped them off” didn’t buy the album as it CREDITS KRAFTWERK for the damn song!! (Not to mention he did get permission from Kraftwerk to use it..)
