Colin Firth Believes in Audience Intelligence

Actor Colin Firth, who recently attended the Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy premiere at the Palazzo del Cinema during the 68th Venice Film Festival on Sept. 5 in Venice, Italy, believes film makers are not giving audiences enough intelligent and thought provoking movies, according to The Guardian.

“I do think there is a tendency to underestimate audiences, I do think there is an appetite to be stretched,” said Firth.

And how convenient that Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy does just that – it looks to challenge the audience’s mind! Based on the classic 1974 novel by John Le Carre, the film tells the story of George Smiley (play by Gary Oldman), a spy who comes out of semi-retirement to catch a Russian spy.

Could this be a ploy to promote the new thought provoking film?

Firth recently confirmed that he is attached to the third installment of Bridget Jones’ Diary with Starbucks addict Renee Zellweger and [hopefully soon!] Hugh Grant, so no extra publicity needed there. And with the stems Cameron Diaz is sporting, the male audience is secured for Gambit.
