Eddie Murphy To Borrow Bodysuit From Trannie Friend To Play The Riddler

December 18th, 2008 // 5 Comments

What? Look, it wasn’t his first time at the “lady with something extra” rodeo! Not judging, just stating! Details about the next installment of Christopher Nolan‘s hugely successful Batman series are coming to light and The Sun is reporting that Eddie Murphy has been signed to play the Riddler.

Ugh. Has Nolan watched his last dozen movies? Damn. Ok, Bowfinger was ok. But…the cop movie set in outer space? The one where he’s driving his own body from his head? This can’t be true unless his agent finally sold his soul to Beezlebub.

And what about these guys?

Other speculation has Shia LaBeouf playing Robin (whose presence always signifies the end of the series pretty much) and Rachel Weisz playing Catwoman. The film is reportedly starting production under the name Gotham.

“Chris wasn’t sure if he wanted to do another movie but
as soon as he decided to, he got the wheels in motion. Eddie’s a fantastic addition. Everyone’s excited to see what he does as the
Riddler,” a source says. Who’s “excited?” Fans of Paris is Burning?

Name 5 good leading roles for black men in the history of cinema and I’ll let you have at Eddie Murphy’s role choices.

Sidney Poitier in “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner”

Howard Rollins, Jr. in “A Soldier’s Story”

Billie Dee Williams in “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi”.

Denzel Washington in “Malcolm X” and “Training Day” (or, any of his films, really…)

Samuel L. Jackson in “Pulp Fiction”, “Unbreakable”, the “Die Hard” movie, “A Time to Kill”.

Will Smith in “Independence Day”, “Men in Black”, and “Bad Boys”.

Don Cheadle in “Hotel Rwanda” and “Ocean’s Eleven”.

I can go on, but I think that’s more than five.

Billy Dee Williams in ESB and ROTJ are definitely not leading roles. The role of Lando Calrissian was created because George Lucas felt guilty about not casting his first choice, Glynn Turman, as Han Solo because he was black.

If Eddie Murphy does the Riddler it will kill the franchise and lead us down the path that killed the original franchise. Clearly the people involved don’t truly understand the Riddler character and realize that it’s open to more realistic updated interpretation. I think the character of the joker portrayed by Ledger is more reminiscent of the Gotham Gaslight stories “Jack the Ripper” personality type. I think the riddler would be ideally played by a british actor with a demeanor similar to the main character in “Clockwork Orange”

so, whaaaaa! I overestimated a couple there.

    the point was made, though.

(I’ll give you ESB, but Lando’s role was pivotal, and larger, in ROTJ, so I’d consider that a “leading” role.)
