If the government can’t take the word away, then I don’t see why Lizzie thinks she has the right to tell others they can’t use the word. Yes, the word brings a painful part of our history but pretending the word doesn’t exist to save others the pain is in a sense denying a bit of out history. If black people want to use something that directly affected them, then who are we or who is that woman to tell them what they can and cannot use. You have the right to choose what words you use or don’t use, but you don’t have the right to choose for others.

Hasselback reminds me of a kid who is trying to get her way (opinion) and when nobody agrees with it she gets upset, cries & acts like such a baby and throws tantrums.

I can in a way try to understand what her meaning is but other racial terms for other races are not as bad as the N-word. But it just makes me laugh at the fact she thinks she’s always right.

While I understood what both ladies were saying and lean a little more toward Whoppi’s explanation, I still not wholeheartedly agree (I am black). I agree with Whoppi on her statement that Elizabeth does not live in our world. She (Elizabeth) and others like her will never know how it feels to be a person of color and have the history that we have.

The word is filled with hurt and hate and so, trying to reclaim it to soften it does not make total sense to me. I don’t use the word and do not care for others to use the word as I feel it negative regardless how it is used or who uses it.
