Gwyneth Paltrow Does Not Wear Fur, Starting…Now

November 20th, 2008 // 2 Comments

Gwyneth Paltrow recently pissed off the good folks at PETA after wearing a fox stole in a Tod’s ad, prompting the group to release a statement that said: “Gwyneth Paltrow won’t be the
apple of her daughter’s eye if she continues to flaunt fur.”

But PETA’s senior
vice president, Dan Mathews, spoke with the actress at the
Fontainebleau Hotel opening in Miami over the weekend. According to Mathews, Paltrow was contrite, most likely aiming to avoid a flouring. He quoted the actress as saying: “That was awkward, and I’m glad you asked, because I do not wear fur at all.” Except, of course, that time she wore fur.

“It was a daylong photo shoot on a boat near Capri, and there were
all sorts of poses with all kinds of clothes – none with fur,” she
added. “During one set-up, a stylist came up from behind and draped a
stole around my shoulder. I didn’t pay much attention to it, and when I
noticed it was fur, I assumed it was fake fur, but did not ask, so it’s
my fault. I was very surprised when they ended up using that one shot
out of hundreds for the centerpiece of the Tod’s ads. I know it’s not a great excuse, but I hope you and your members understand.”

It is hilarious to see these celebrities twisting themselves into knots to fulfill some phony politically correct agenda, that they probably do not subscribe to in the first place. Gwyneth Paltrow has worn fur countless times in the past. A few years ago, she even bragged about her Fendi fox fur stole to a magazine. Many of these celebs love fur, but are afraid of the backlash so they pretend to disdain it. Thus, we get absurd statements from actresses telling us they were “tricked” into wearing real fur. Cate Blanchett recently appeared nude lying on a fox coat, and claimed she did now know it was real. If you cannot tell the difference between real and fake fur while you’re lying naked on the stuff, then you’ve got bigger issues to worry about than the fur/no fur debate. It is also interesting that Gwyneth claimes she was tricked into wearing the fur, but in the same ad campaign she wears oodles of exotic skin shoes and accessories by Tod’s. So, once again, it is wrong to wear fox fur but somehow completely acceptable to wear a dead snake, lizard or alligator? And, please don’t start with the we eat animals argument. When was the last time Gwyneth ate a lizard burger?
