Cool kid Maddox Jolie started his first day at school at Manhattan’s ultra-exclusive Lycee Francais de New York on the Upper East Side. They teach the kids in French. That’s interesting because you’d think Spanish or Japanese would be more useful. But all the rich bitches like their kids to know French. Maybe so they don’t seem hesitant in Paris when shopping for couture or something. I took five years of Latin and know nothing. It’s a dead language. I can sing “Come All Ye Faithful” in Latin, though. That’s something. No it isn’t.
His movie-star parents showed up at the East 75th Street campus – an $18,000-a-year private school where lessons are taught in French – on Tuesday for their oldest child’s first day, a source told The Post’s Jennifer Fermino. “They were just like normal parents,” said the snitch. Except better-looking, of course. Jolie recently told reporters she wanted to move around a lot so the kids could escape the media attention, but it appears they’re putting down roots in New York. The ever-expanding brood has been logging some serious time at the Upper West Side condo that Jolie has owned for years, according to another source. And Papa Pitt took Maddox, a Derek Jeter fan, to the Yankees’ game on Tuesday night.
I guess the Katrina guilt didn’t last too long. Imagine being able to move whenever and wherever you want with minimum hassle? The world is your U-Haul. You don’t need a U-Haul, you have beautfiul things around the world! I like Maddox’s outfit. You know he misses the days when it was just him and Ma and Brad before the other jerks showed up.

Mad has been going to french school since he started pre-school, presumably because his grandmother was french and his mother has significant feelings about maintaining that tie.
As far as Mad starting school in NYC, it’s September! Kids start school in September. If the family plans on being there for weeks or months, it would be–I assume–mandated by law that school-age children (ie. Maddox) go to school.
This has nothing to do with their house in New Orleans, nor does it have anything to do with their home in Malibu or here in Alberta.
Lay off, woulda? At least he’s getting an education.

Are you upset that Jolie is a sht actress who’s only performance worth sht was Lisa Rowe. Are you mad because the only reason it was passable is because Holie KNOWS from first hand experience what it is like to be an inmate in a mental hospital? Or are you upset that she likes to stick her tongue down her brothers throat? Jittery about the fact that she has to get all those trashy tatt’s to cover up the scars from her needle marks and her self-inflicted knife wounds? Are you ranting because Holie has been in more Hollywood beds than all known forms of VD?

They will yank poor little Maddox out of this school as they did the one in New Orleans. Poor kid! How will he or his siblings learn anything the way they move around? Has that ever occurred to them. Also, little ones need stability; i.e., same home, same school, same mealtime, etc.
Cannot wait for the first tell all book from one of the kids.

Madd goes to the same school wherever they go. So the lesson plan is still the same. Plus he has a tutor and a woman that comes to talk to him in Khmer his native language so he doesn’t forget. The same with Pax. He’s only 6 so his social life is not in the least bit threatened.

I am sure by the time those kids are adults they will know many languages. Having learned both Spanish and French, I can say they are very similar and once you know one, it’s easy to pick up the other.
I think it’s great that they actually put him in a school instead of keeping him at home with a private tutor all the time, kids need to know there are more people in the world than the ones with camera shaped heads that follow them around. I have this image of him being all “Yeah, that’s MY mom – she’s the Tomb Raider…yeah, that’s MY dad – he was Sexiest Man Alive a couple times”…and then the teachers all swoon…

I think the constant uprooting is going to get harder and harder as the kids get bigger and discover their own friends. I feel bad for the first time Maddox gets a ‘best buddy’ for a couple of months only to be yanked away for mummy or daddy’s next “project”. At least military kids sometimes get a couple of years between posts – these kids get a couple of months when they’re lucky.

jen- I agree. I have a good friend (son of an Colonel in the army) who spent his childhood on the move every 2 to 3 years, which isn’t too bad. Still, he says he feels like he is from nowhere and he doesn’t have the feeling of having ties or roots to any particular place.
Personally, i think its very important to have this feeling of knowing where you come from. It grounds you, its your foundation.
I don’t care how wonderful the Jolypits are with the children, they are depriving them of routine and the chance to call one place home.

It would be interesting to know where Maddox stands in relation to what a boy his age is supposed to have mastered in school. I wonder how they escape having him tested by the public school system each year?
I guess AJ is too into what she wants to do to worry about her kid staying in the same school for more than a month. That would interfere with her living her BOLD life!

I agree with those here that say the kids need more stability.
It is great that they have the stability of two parents who appear to love them very much.
and it’s also great that they get to travel and experience other cultures, but there’s a time for that, and it’s called “vacation”, that is, when they’re NOT in school. Regardless of whether or not Mad goes to the same school in each city they travel to, it’s NOT the same as going to the same school, in the SAME place, for a year or more. As Jen said regarding a “best buddy”, once they start to make friends in one place, they’re ripped away for god knows how long to yet another city. They’re never going to learn how to make life-long (or even long-term) friends when they know they’ll be gone in a couple of months.
Kids thrive best when there is a regular schedule, and this flitting around is only going to teach them that it’s OK to be flighty and temporary, and they’re not going to know how to build lasting relationships. At six, his social life may not be threatened, but his ability to understand any semblance of permanency is going to suffer.

It’s all for image. If you really cared about your kid you would make English and then Cambodian his focus.

Madd goes to private schools so there is no public school testing for him. I think they’ll slow down eventually because as the kids get older they won’t be getting any younger. Besides Angie’s taking a break in 2008 to have her baby and be with the kids.

Yeah I agree, Jen and Green — as if life isn’t hard enough as it is, in such an individualistic, transient society. People who have lived in one place all of their lives are struggling to make connections and feel loved, because of the lack of close family and/or close ties to a community. Can’t imagine that all of this traveling around, with one parent constantly missing, and being plucked from a totally different culture, that these kids aren’t going to struggle in some way. Madd seems pretty well adjusted, but he pretty much had Angelina to himself and they stayed in one place for quite some time.

Angie didn’t want to live in the states she already had her estate in London but I assume Brad convinced her to sell it and move to Malibu with him. Her kids are still young. Madd’s best friend is Adam Pearl and he travels just as much with his mother Marianne. Who knows what the future holds but I have no doubt that the kids are loved and will only receive the best. There is no such thing as perfection and there is definitely more than one way to raise a family.

i had 5 years of latin in highschool too and all i can recall of it is the beginning of the bible. and it was a public school.

I agree there is no such thing as a perfect family but these two have the financial means for one of them not to work and stay at home full time with the children.
These two both have HECTIC schedules.They are literally jumping from one film set to another , always in a diferent city or country. I never remember Brad Pitt travelling to such an extent before becoming a father, which leads me to believe it’s more Angelina than him that wants to do this.
Does all the travelling not get old? Yeah, it sounds wonderful in theory, but imagine the constant adjusting to time zones, temperature, culture, food, language, people, customs and just when you’ve got your bearings, its time to go again!

Brad did travel a lot when he was with Jen but it’s double time now because they have to deal with both his and Angie’s schedule. Jen was based in California because of Friends so she couldn’t travel as much. But they schedule their time so if one is working the other is off. Lately, it’s been Angie working and Brad taking time off now it’s the other way around. They’re with their kids practically everyday there are plenty of pictures to prove it. They are good parents and will do whatever they feel is necessary for their children. That is their goal to not have to work so much.

Well, they certainly make sure there’s pictures of at least one of them with the kids every day – not one of us knows what else goes on when the nannies are off break time.
People raise the same amount of children on what Brad leaves for tips in a year – you can’t tell me they need more money.
I have to disagree they actually take time off – even when they were in Prague Brad was filming commercials and flying back to North America for location shots.

To do what they want to do they need the money. Charity wise to continue to fund their different philanthropic efforts. To have the freedom to take off whenever and wherever they feel like it. To keep the lifestyle they’re accustomed to they need the money.

STABILITY is when you wake up to the same parents and siblings everyday; the same people who take care of you everyday; kiss and hug you everyday; feed you and play with you everyday. That’s stability. A house has nothing to do with “stability” in my opinion. Nothing material has anything to do with stability. There are people who have lived in the same house in the same city in the same neighborhood all their lives and still have trouble knowing where they belong or wondering who cares about them. As long as a child is with the people who love him, everything will fall into place.
Some of you sound like people who have never traveled or never ventured from your place of birth. There is nothing wrong with traveling the world and learning about new cultures and people; there is nothing wrong with learning to speak other languages; there is nothing wrong with going from school to school. At least Maddox is in school. He could easily be home schooled (liked many, many American children are these days) and his parents would avoid the criticism thrown their way by the “concerned” citizens on this blog.
These children appear to be happy, healthy and normal. Of course, I have no inside knowledge that they are but none of you have any inside knowledge that they aren’t. We only know what we see in photographs and until these kids grow up, that’s all we will know.

French is the next most commonly used international language after English. Studies show that learning multiple languages at an early age can help in the development of a more native accent of that language, improved learning in school and problem solving skills.
And for the record, AngietotheMax, private schools still must meet testing requirements put forth by individual states. In my opinion, testing, public or private, is a joke and not truly indicative of the teacher or learner.

I suspect the reason Maddox goes to Lycee Francais is because they have schools all over the world. And, yes, traveling students can easily slip in and out since the lesson plans are consistent at each location. I’m sure that Maddox’s education is not neglected.
$18,000 is not a lot of money for a private school especially not in NYC. There are others much more expensive. Private schools have to adhere to state educational standards. Private school students have to take standardized tests required by the state.
Six year old children do not have social lives, so to speak. For the most part, their “social lives” revolve around their families and siblings. Short term best bud relationships are very common with children. What do you think happens at summer camp?
Where are all these nannies some people talk about? I would hope they have some help with the kids but it seems pretty clear that they are very hands on parents and do the day to day parenting. So let’s hear where you think they are hiding the army of nannies?

You guys are silly. Maddox is adopted from Cambodia, who has history with the French. Besides Khmer, the Cambodian people speak French. It’s too bad our public school system doesnt teach us enough about other countries. There’s probably not too many schools that teach Khmer here, so French is the next best thing.

The advantage of going to a Lycee Francais is that the curriculum is identical all over the world. I went to one — it was originally set up for the children of french diplomats….it’s actually pretty damn smart of them

I would like to see the kids with other children besides just their family. I know Jolie grew up a loner and you can see that she is still a loner who doesn’t trust or get close to people. Most of her friendships are superficial. My God – she stated that Marianne Pearl was perhaps her closest girlfriend. In all these years?! That tells you something. She’s “deep” with her exes and that’s about it.

Maddox is from Cambodia, part of what was formerly Indochine, or French South East Asia. Teaching a child the language of his colonizers might be controversial, but it does seem somewhat related.
