Its Not Porn…

It is just educational erotic, nude, bed gymnastics.

“Shortbus” is a film created by writer-director John Cameron Mitchell. The actors are “exploring their character.” Don’t write off Sook-Yin Lee as just another over-made sex kitten. She is a sex therapist ironically unable climax.

John explains the difficulty in understanding stating that:

“We have to keep reminding people it’s not pornographic — it’s not a film that’s meant to arouse. We try to de-eroticize the sex to see what kind of emotions and ideas are left over when the haze of eroticism is waved away.”

There is actually a plot in which several New Yorkers go underground to a “salon” to “explore” curiosities and relationships. When you walk out of the movie, you are meant to think deeper….not just about sex like some uber-randy Pee Wee Herman sitting in a theater with some extra butter popcorn and KY.

The real problem is the acceptance of the film’s graphic nature. Many movies of the same idea and content are slated NC-17 and slash the audience it reaches. Joanna Angel who is a journalist and web designer (you might also recognize her name from the credits in “House of Ass”) throws in her opinion…

“They’re still Hollywood movies. The difference between mainstream movies and porn, no matter how high-end the porn industry gets — people are making movies in HD, with bigger budgets and plots — porn is still being made with the intent that some guy will buy it and (masturbate) to it. If you can’t succeed in that you’ve failed. I want to make something that’s hot before I want to make something that’s good. If people are saying these movies are porn they should sit down and watch a porn and find out.”

Let the debate begin….

This movie is amazing. I do agree that it is not porn . . . . . . but it could be!
