Jimmy Fallon’s ‘Typically Stiff Debut’

March 3rd, 2009 // 12 Comments

Kicking off his first night permanently taking over for Jay Leno, Jimmy Fallon‘s first night as regular host for the late night talk show was “typically stiff,” according to a critic for the Hollywood Reporter.

“He tried too hard, stumbled over his punchlines and struggled to make Robert De Niro seem interesting,” the writer said of Fallon’s interaction with his guest. Justin Timberlake also took a seat on the couch, with Van Morrison as musical guest. With his dead-on impersonations of a warbly John Mayer and Michael MacDonald, Justin stole the show.

As for Jimmy, Entertainment Weekly described his monologue as “ultra-ordinary” and said Fallon “looked nervous,” but then again it was his first day. Personally, I don’t know how he could possibly top his performance in Taxi, that gem of iconoclastic classic American cinema, but we’ll give him time.

Jimmy Fallon isn’t taking over for Jay Leno. He’s taking over for Conan O’Brien. O’Brien will be taking over for Leno in June.

Nice to see you know what you’re talking about.

Uh, “taking over for Jay Leno”, who wants to read anything else that you write, considering the fact that he took over for Conan O’Brian.

    Edit much?

He’s taking over for Conan who’s taking over for Leno later this year…..

Ok seeing as how everyone else has beaten the mistake horse to death, i’ll change the subject to say Jimmy Fallon’s debut was utterly uninspiring and shameful to say the least. His hosting personality doesn’t cut it and it wasn’t just a ‘first day on the job’ issue. His personality is set in stone and just doesn’t cut it for hosting late night comedy talk. His interviewing personality is ‘sorta’ ok and he’s a nice guy, but the way he looks after saying something funny is just too reminiscent of Seth Myers from SNL. Stop looking for a laugh and putting a cheesy smile on while waiting for it. Maybe I’ve just been spoiled by Conan’s ability/personality. Who knows.

Ok since everyone else has pretty much beaten the mistake horse to death, I’ll change the subject. Jimmy Fallon’s performance last night was shameful and utterly uninspiring to say the least and was not a ‘first day on the job’ issue. His interview personality is ‘sorta’ ok and he seems like a nice guy, but his reactions after he tells a joke are reminiscent of Seth Myers from SNL. Stop looking for laughs with the cheesy smile and waiting, staring until you get it. Stop cheesy-smiling at your own jokes. Say funny/witty things with a straight face and you will seem MUCH funnier. Maybe I’m just spoiled by Conan’s ability/personality. Jimmy doesn’t have a good hosting personality and was a bad choice.
