Joaquin Phoenix: Bearded Trickster

January 28th, 2009 // 3 Comments

EW reports that Walk the Line actor Joaquin Phoenix is simply pretending to be in the midst of a career change from acting to music. Reportedly, the star’s buddy Casey Affleck is documenting Phoenix’s fake rap career and subsequent nervous breakdown.

A tipster claims Phoenix has said, “It’s a put-on. I’m going to pretend to have a meltdown and change careers, and Casey is going to film it.”

The butt of the joke is intended to be self-indulgent actors, as well as gossip-hungry media. I can sort of appreciate his efforts, but the truth is that farce died with reality television.

If he can pull off a stunt more ridiculous and over-the-top than something I can easily find on Brett MichaelsRock of Love Tour Bus, then maybe I’ll be impressed. Either way, we get hits reporting on it, so thanks Joaquin!

The whole make-believe…masquerading as reality…to taunt the press…and parody fame…act has been done. Remember Andy Kaufman?
