Joaquin Phoenix is apparently on one of those dark night of the soul journeys or there’s some sort of slapfight going on with this brain chemistry because he’s acting the fool. He recently announced he was quitting acting to play guitar at a benefit for one of Paul Newman’s charities. But that wasn’t all that was going on that night. Page Six reports that he was either blotto or high as a kite.

It was a charity reading of a play, but Joaquin seemed to be somewhat bored.

“Other actors were performing scenes and readings, but Phoenix just got
up and walked out,” a source says. “He wobbled back in a bit later, but it was odd. He was slurring his words and was unsteady on his
feet.”

Then he showed up for the AFI’s premire of Che on Saturday with “BYE” and “GOOD” written on opposing fists and looking like Vincent Gallo on a Sunday morning. And insisting he really is quitting the movie game to navel gaze, stay high or what have you.

“I think it’s just moving on. It’s rediscovering something else,” said Joaquin.

“It’s like greener pastures, you know what I mean?” he says. “And so, I’m just going to try and like, I’ll just be
doing the other thing. … Hopefully, I will emotionally impact you
with that, as well.”

Something seems to have impacted him, if you know what we’re getting at.
