Kathy Does DC

Kathy Griffin is a multi-talent: stand-up, sitcom actress, reality star, gay mascot, Anderson Cooper’s sidekick.  Looks like this week her skills grew yet again; this time Griffin worked on flexing her new talent for lobbying in DC.

The funny woman took a jaunt to Capitol Hill and spent the week making an effort to repeal the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.  Although she claimed she was “nervous the whole time because it’s not [her] world,”  the D-List star has long been a public supporter of Gay Rights.  During her marathon of persuasion, Kathy took on meetings to promote the repeal with White House Majority bigwigs James Clyburn and Barney Frank, gay rights activists, and radio and television Correspondents.  Pretty serious meetings for a jokey lass!

Of course, her every move was caught on tape for her Reality Show, My Life on the D List, “for this season’s ‘serious’ episode — Griffin has 300,000 fans on Twitter, 3 million viewers, plus plenty of gay soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, where she has performed. Doesn’t make her an expert, but does get the notice of lawmakers on the ‘don’t ask’ issue.”

Of course, with all the political talk going on, there has to be some comedic relief.  Apparently Griffin’s wardrobe for the week was a bit casual by DC standards, and in the end she learned the hard way that a uniform of a suit and heels is generally well-received in those parts (pink Valentino coat, Chanel dress, and Fendi heels if you’re Kathy Griffin doing DC).  The girl has no regrets, however, joking that, “the amount of gay men that I ran into did actually prove that it’s a good thing I overpacked the shoes and bags. While Jim Clyburn really couldn’t give a shit about my shoes, several people in that very hallway definitely took notice.”

At a reception in her honor at DC’s Ris Restaurant, Griffin got chummy with Arianna

Huffington.  I hope Huffington was talking her into double-teaming in the near future on Real Time with Bill Mahar.  That would be television genius.
