Keira Knightley To Play Eliza Doolittle

April 14th, 2006 // 10 Comments

Keira Knightley is one busy actress. She’s currently filming François Girard‘s Silk (the photos are of Keira and her boyfriend, Rupert Friend, when he visited her on set). She just finished Pirates of the Caribbean 2, and next she’s lining up My Fair Lady.

According to the London News Telegraph, Oscar-nominated actress Keira Knightley–a self-professed fan of musicals–will play the feisty Cockney flower girl tutored by Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady.

“Knightley…is said to be ‘thrilled’ at the prospect of taking the role made famous on film by Audrey Hepburn in the 1960s,” states the article. Cameron Mackintosh–who was also behind the hit 2001 London revival starring Martine McCutcheon and Jonathan Pryce–will produce, and that same production’s director Trevor Nunn will helm the new My Fair Lady.

However, both are as of yet unsure whether they will be taking on My Fair Lady as a stage production or as a movie musical. Knightley–who will soon be meeting with the Mackintosh’s musical director and who was seen “studying the script madly” while filming Pirates of the Caribbean 2 in the Bahamas–is reportedly prepared to star in My Fair Lady on either stage or screen.

I am so SICK, SICK, SICK of remakes of old movies.

  2. KittyLiterati

It’s uncanny how much Rupert Friend resembles Orlando Bloom (albeit not olive and dark-haired), especially in Pride & Prejudice.

  3. Mrs.

That face she is constantly making is so attractive. What is it supposed to look like? Like her lips are so luscious that it’s burdensome to her? Oh, they’re so big…I, I can hardly close my mouth. What the hell?

  4. ortem

not sure if he looks like orlando bloom as much as he looks like all the cool euro boys… I prefer their hippie look to the silly trendy look for fella’s here in the states

Are you kidding me? I agree with the first comment. Enough with the remakes! My God do something original already! No more sequels or remakes, PLEASE!!!!

Kitty, I agree. First glance I thought it was Bloom, especially in the uppermost pic. Similar cheekbones and nose.

And please please keep the musical on the stage and out of the movie theater. Nobody can top Audrey Hepburn!

More importantly, why would anybody WANT to top Audrey Hepburn? Too much room for comparison and failure.

  8. las

That horrible remake of “Charade” was proof enough.

What’s with that turban he’s wearing? Weird… And before “My Fair Lady” there was “Pygmalion”–much superior to Audrey’s version. My Fair Lady was a remake of Pygmalion as a musical. I love Audrey but once I saw Pygmalion I could never watch My Fair Lady again. Shame it doesn’t get the credit it should…

it would never be as successfull as the original one. its impossible to top audrey hepburn. but if a remake is gonna be made, then natalie portman would be perfect for the role. i just cant see keira knightley playing audrey hepburn’s role.
also i realy agree that rupert looks like orlando bloom, looks a lot like him.
