And we’re off!
While Michael “Cheech & Chong“ Phelps, may have prayed on his most expensive glass piece that his sponsors wouldn’t think twice about that little bong hit picture, Kellogg is the first to step forward and end his contract at the end of the month.
Tony the Tiger is a strict one-beer-with-dinner kind of a guy. None of this whacky tobaccy.
“We originally built the relationship with Michael, as well as the other
Olympic athletes, to support our association with the U.S. Olympic
team. Michael’s most recent behavior is not consistent with the image
of Kellogg. His contract expires at the end of February and we have
made a decision not to extend his contract.”
Likewise, USA Swimming has suspended Michael and ceased his financial support for three months. Any normal person may feel the monetary clench but Michael will probably be just fine. In fact, this just gives him more time to Bromance.
USA Swimming seems to be using Phelps as an example, in case any upstart freestylers or back strokers get any funny ideas about getting their pictures taken with pipes and blunts in hot-boxed cars.
“This is not a situation where any anti-doping rule was violated, but we
decided to send a strong message to Michael because he disappointed so
many people, particularly the hundreds of thousands of USA Swimming
member kids who look up to him as a role model and a hero.”
Well, if we read of a statistical marijuana use upswing among swimmers, we’ll know who to blame.

Lame. Boycott Kellogg’s….
I agree, smoking pot vs. drinking whisky? Pot is so much better for society (I mean as far as vices go)
i think that smoking pot is wrong. and drinking is no better. any body that thinks that it is ok to do these things is wrong.
Pot is an illegal substance no matter how you feel about it being a natural high. Honestly,in my early 40′s and don’t know ANY long term pot smokers who don’t have messy homes, no career direction and the emotional development of a 12 year old. And all of thst untaxed income for the dope dealers flowing right out of the country to the dealers. Shameful. I guess if you want to say that booze and cigarettes are also damaging to people and pot should be legal that you’d have an argument. Too bad all of the stoners can’t put down their munchies and get their shit together to lobby for it.
Too bad that kid had to learn such a public lesson about not trusting people…..
I look at it this way: If this was our child or our kid brother, could we honestly say that we would be as lenient to him as we want Kelloggs and US Swimming to be with Phelps? I wouldn’t.
A wrong is a wrong, no matter how minor it is.
If he was caught completely drunk and stumbling all over the place I doubt Kelloggs and US Swimming would of done much really. He might of got a slap on the wrist. Alcohol is the number one killer but because it’s legal no one says anything. So he smoked a bit of pot, who cares.
