Universal Pictures and Focus Features announced today that Kelly Marcel will pen the screenplay for the film everyone has been waiting for: Fifty Shades of Grey. Bret Easton Ellis is no doubt weeping into his keyboard right now, having campaigned relentlessly on Twitter for the past few months.
Marcel wrote the script for Saving Mr. Banks, about Walt Disney’s 20-year pursuit of the film rights to P.L. Travers’ book, Mary Poppins and the relationship that developed in the process. The film is currently being shot at Walt Disney Studios and stars Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson and Colin Farrell. Marcel also served as co-creator and executive producer of Fox’s short-lived series, Terra Nova.
“Kelly’s work demonstrates her flawless structural technique and passionate commitment to emotion, humor and depth of character which is particularly visible in the celebrated screenplay for the upcoming Saving Mr. Banks,” one of Fifty‘s producer Michael De Luca said of Marcel. “We were all taken with the depth and passion of Kelley’s engagement with the characters and world E L James has created and we knew she was the right person to augment our Fifty Shades family,” added the film’s other producer, Dana Brunetti.
E.L. James will also serve as a producer on the film.
