Lauryn Hill Into Self-Sabotage

July 20th, 2007 // 43 Comments

You can forget that next Fugees record. Miss Lauryn Hill is still crazy as ever and terrified of success. Her Fugees bandmate Pras explained to Billboard magazine why their newest collaboration was a no-go. Lauryn was too busy with the crazy outfits and the bi-polar behavior. You know you better….WATCH OUT!

“We [The Fugees] went in the studio and recorded a couple records that were incredible. But, to put it nicely, it’s dead. Me and [Wy]Clef, we on the same page, but Lauryn [Hill] is in her zone, and I’m fed up with that shit. Here she is, blessed with a gift, with the opportunity to rock and give and she’s running on some bullshit? I’m a fan of Lauryn’s but I can’t respect that.”

“Running on some bullshit” is my new favorite phrase for someone acting stank. Thank you, Pras. What is it when someone hits it huge and then can’t deal with it afterwards? And they start running around with an acoustic guitar and thinking they’re Joan Baez? And wearing a lot of clamshell necklaces and acting like they’re hearing voices? Lauryn, stop. Come back to us. Don’t be a hard rock when you really are a gem, baby girl!

It’s very sad to watch her self-destruct like she’s been doing for the last few years. I wish she would just go and get help to deal with her many issues.

I have a feeling that’s not really a fro on her head. It’s some sort of weird, fuzzy alien life form that feeds on good sense and talent.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill will always be near the top of my stack of cds. Who knows why people veer off the road when they do?

Fame can be a scary thing I guess…too bad, she is really talented.

I’d lose my damn mind too if I had to figure out a way to follow up “Miseducation”. I’ll take a horrible afro wig over a sophomore slump anyday.

There’s some quote explaining how brilliance is often eventually accompanied by corruption or insanity or something. I dunno man. Add her name to the Whitney and Michael pile I guess.

Didn’t like all of her “collaborators” on “Miseductation” wind up suing her crazy ass for one reason or other? I think it’s no coinky-dink she hasn’t done squat since, except for that rambling “Unplugged” disc…maybe she’ll make “Sister Act 3″…

I think it falls into the category with Dave Chappelle. There has to be a reason why these men and women of color are finding fame and success and then finding it to be so unappealing, or disgusting, that they run from it.

I saw Lauryn’s concert in Dubai this month and it was a travesty. She was more than an hour late after demanding a private jet from organizers, her voice was hoarse and singing unintelligible. By the time she got to ‘That Thing’ and ‘Ready or Not’ there were only about 30 people left in the audience. Sad waste of talent.

It is just a shame that Bob Marley’s son gave her some of his daddy’s gene’s mean he was into freedom from mental slavery. And Lauren is the poster child of mental slavery. She is bigot and a ugly person. Rita and her should get along great

Isn’t she the one who said she would reather not sell CD’s then have white people buy them?

  16. rotten | July 20, 2007 at 7:49 pm

She never said those racist things you guys are quoting and she addresses these assertions on her unplugged CD.

People are the reason she is having a hard time because people do screwed up things to one another.

And Bob Marley’s father is white and his mother is black. He was not racist either. He addressed this same stuff in his interviews and his music also.

You people are a hateful lot!
I wish her well. I have been able to listen to some of the singles she has released in Europe over the years that have not made it stateside because Colombia records thinks her music is too political and won’t release her albums.

I’m sorry, what? Same as there must be a reason why Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen, and Pete Doherty are headed in the same self-destructive direction. Why does it have to be about color? ALL artists struggle to put their emotions into words….things like this cross all boundaries. No one has a monopoly on crazy.

I am a fan of lauryn’s and i’m a gay white scottish jew living in england. I just thought i’d throw that in cos colour and creed should have nothing to do with the music we like.

Anyhoo, I think lauryn would have been too constrained being back with the fugees just because i believe she wants to really talk about something meaningful and inspirational (i get this from one of lyrics on miseducation). I would love to hear some fugees but i would love even more to hear a lauryn hill record coming out. Girl just needs to decide what reason she would like to release music for and if she can’t find one then we will never hear said record.

I just want some crazy lauryn ad libs and funky production to go with it, some beautiful lyrics and her massively creative mind to be a little inventive with the concepts she deals with. That sounds like a miseducation number 2 – so i kind of see the pressure she must feel. Just go for it lauryn!!! You only get one chance at life, so dont let your talent go to waste!! xxx

Lauren Hill is one crazy ass beeyotch. She has a beautiful voice and I recently read in an interview that she drinks her own urine and gargles her own diarrhea to maintain her singing voice. Here is a link to the article:

In an interview she said that it was weird when she was receiving awards. Like she was making an altar to herself. That is the most admirable comment any celebrity has made. The stupid shows giving them awards like they saved somebody’s life. Doctors and nurses do this everyday and they get squat. I admire Lauryn for seeing the reality of how fake the entertainment business is.

  31. Vrai | July 24, 2007 at 2:49 am

To be great is to be misunderstood.

I love you Lauryn and I support your choice to give your gift to the world however you see fit. Don’t let others tell you what to do with your talent.
Take the highroad, be a true muse.

Maybe someday they’ll forget about about all the fame and fortune, open up their ears and finally listen.

It is so annoying to find out that some uninformed idiots are still talking about that malicious rumour about Lauryn being racist. These rumours were unfounded, Lauryn went to the Howard Stern show and several interviews to clarify this, and even MTV backed her up by declaring that she has never indicated that she hates white people. How can she be racist when she grew up in a white suburb and went to predominantly white school? People are so misinformed. I am so surprised that some people seem not to know that Bob Marley was biracial. I remember I was watching some of Bob’s interview and he was interviewed by a white journalist, and the journalist asked him that some people might think that he does not like white people, and he told the journalist that he does not favour black or white people, he cannot do that since he represents both races, and he indicated that his father was white and mother black, and he is just sending messages of love, peace and unity. It is so amazing how we judge other people and label them without knowing their background and what they are thinking. Bottom line stop labelling people especially when you don’t know them.

  35. ELH | July 26, 2007 at 11:22 am

“By the way Rotten, she DID say those things and my cousin was at a show where she did. Totally disgusted the audience and many walked out. My cousin vowed to never assist or buy anything to do with Lauryn since then”

The above comments written by stupid, ignorant, jealous and misinformed Marshy Martha

Dear Marshy Martha what show was this by the way, how come it was never showed on TV repeatedly to prove that she said those things. I cannot wait for the day Lauryn sues someone for this. Do people know that Lauryn Hill is childhood friends with actor Zach Braff from Scrubs? Do people know that Lauryn grew up with white people and she even went to white schools? It really saddens me to realise that there so many racist jealous people out there who would go out of their way to tarnish Lauryn’s image because they cannot deal with the fact that there are beautiful, intelligent, classy and educated black women. I guess it is hard for some racist white people to see such a black talented woman, therefore they would go out of their way to tarnish her image and call her all derogatory names in order to make themselves feel good. I just realise everyday that some white people do not want black people to progress it is really annoying.

  36. ipps | July 27, 2007 at 4:24 am

There is so much racism in this world i cannot believe some of things written on this blog it is so pathetic. Anyone who would think Lauryn is racist is really ignorant, people must get over this because this rumour was cleared and dealt with 13 years ago, for any one to bring it up now it is really reprehensible, and if she was racist 18 million people would not have bought the Miseducation or she would not have received more than 30 awards for this album and the charity work she has done. I truly agree with ELH and TUSA, I mean Lauryn is socially and politically conscious but that does not make her racist, she is just well informed and knowledgeable, and people must not confuse her intelligence with racism.

I think some racist white people might embrace black female artists like Beyonce, Rihanna and the rest of them because they are not intelligent, they portray sex gimmick images, ashamed of their roots and culture, and they do not represent black women well, and the media has allowed for many years to portray black people negatively. When a black female artist is intelligent, street smart, multi talented, well informed, grew up in rich suburbs, have a University education it becomes a problem and unacceptable. I guess with Lauryn’s skills, she might intimidate a lot of people. Why every time when a black artist does something out of the ordinary the media and some racist people would want to taint their image and say all sorts of negative things? I guess some people would have wished Lauryn to white since; racists white people always want to associate themselves with greatness and convince themselves that black people don’t deserve to be held at higher places in our society. She is black and multitalented and no one can compete with her and all these new so called divas of today they can shake their booties, take off their clothes, imitate her style like Amy Winehouse but will never reach her level not in a million years. So get over it and move on with your lives.

  37. M.S. | February 12, 2008 at 12:53 pm

WOW!!!! I have read all the posts and I can say God is good. Because event though all these posts are about a year old, I wonder what people say now?!?! I didn’t know much about Lauren but I remember when people were talking about her and how she has become crazy and her voice is going bad. I have listen to a lot of her old music which were so motivating and full of passion. But when I noticed that she has been missing for a while I thought that she was done. But glory be to the living God because He touched her heart and showed her The Way. Now I have listen to some of the new singles that she has out now and they explained so much. I don’t believe she was racist but if she was, I know for a fact that she is no longer. If she did any of the crazy things that people say did, I know for a fact that she does any more.
There is so much that we need to learn about ourselves, like why do we take delight in talking about others negatively, why do we hide our own faults by exposing others and why do we neglect those who may need our help as if it is not our concern, finally, why do we repay evil with evil???????
She though that she was spiritual and religious like the way I thought that I was, but during her drama Jesus came and rescued her but only because she allowed Him to; just like I invited Jesus in to my heart some time ago when I became confused. So many people think that they are in church or belong to a religion and are good people when they are not. But it is not until we accept Jesus into our hearts and become Christ imitators from our heart’s emotions, thoughts and then our actions that things become peaceful that things become so clear. In the past year or so that is what Lauren did, she got away and separated from what was blocking her of her freedom and form hearing God’s voice, then she spent time with God’s word and got to know God and what He wants for her. (she realized that you need to have a personal relationship with God not just call yourself a christen) Now she is back in a different way (better way) and it has people talking: she is still crazy, she is not making real money, what is she talking about? But the reality is that what she is doing is giving her freedom that no one can take away and no one can make her go crazy.
She did something that a lot of people couldn’t do even if you paid them–she gave it up and did what she had to so she could complete her transition (some people would start but would give up in the middle because they want people to stop talking about them, they love the money too much, or will be talked out of it by the devil in their heads saying it is too hard-she didn’t do this alone like I didn’t do it alone but I asked Jesus to help me be strong and I believed that He would make me strong and that I will get over all of what I was letting go) so when she was going trough that crazy time it was really her understanding and withdrawal stage.
Now what is so wrong with change? Then ask yourself, “What can’t God do?–God can change a murderer into an angle if that murderer really wanted to be changed.
    Lets make this about ourselves!!!
Does Lauren’s past life sound like you and your life (even if you are not a famous singer, maybe you have a boy/girlfriend, friends, family member, or even a bad habit that is pulling you form being your own person and making good (non-sinful) choices, are you willing to separate from all of that to get to know your self and God ( you can not truly get to know yourself if you do not know God—Don’t let anyone tell you differently).
Open your mind and heart>>>> A more straight forward question is “are you clean from your past sins and IF YOU DIED RIGHT NOW, WILL YOU GO TO HEAVEN OR HELL? (Have you lied to hell, stole, masturbated, been angry or have not forgiven a person for something they have done to you, or anything you think doesn’t please God—if you have done only one of these your going to hell). If you say heaven and have not confessed with your mouth and believed with your heart that Jesus died for your sins on the cross and that God raised Him from the dead and also have not been baptized, then the bible says that you will not enter heaven but go to hell. Now if you have done all of this but still have not changed all your sinful ways into good ways then you were never saved in the first place because you didn’t believe in your heart all the way that Jesus died for you (even if you thought you did). If you truly want to live peaceful and clean life and want to go to heaven call on God and pray this prayer.
“Heavenly Father, I come to you in the name of Jesus. Your Word says, “Whoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Acts 2:21) I am calling on you. I pray and ask Jesus to come into my heart and be Lord over my life according to Romans 10: 9-10, “If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” I do that now. I confess that Jesus is Lord, and I believe in my heart that God has raised Him form the dead. I ask God to forgive me of all my sins and Lord change me and make me clean. In Jesus name Amen.

If you took this seriously and need any help or have any questions please email me smahlet@yahoo.com

from my understanding the album is about her finding the truth. which is that we african americans are descendents of the ancient israelites of the bible. read deuteronomy chapter 28. we live in mystery babylon with a crooked system and many people wont accept it. Freedom time is a good exampple. shes explaining how the current day so called jews are not who the say they are. they are lying. we live in mystery babylon and we teach doctrines of ba’al the canaanite god. Ba’al means lord and god.
we are taught lies and we don’t find a need to search for the truth. she though she was someone then found out that every thing she had been tought to believe was a lie. did you notice she tried so hard not to use lord and god during the album but instead she said father. and when she did use lord and god look at the context in which she used it. she’s trying to give the people the truth because we live in this fatasy world and we are taught to love lies and reject the truth. the album has a deeper meaning. its not just her emotions being spread over some bible verses. she was crying for man kind. “living a lie and adam all die”. Satan has decieved the whole world and majority doesn’t care. they rather practice ther family traditions and worship satan not even realizing that they are doing so… i think that is enough to make one break down.

  39. Buddha Girl | July 7, 2008 at 7:08 am

Let me just start by saying that Bob Marley doesn’t have much to do with Lauryn Hill. I know black people (with “racist” parents) who date white people & vice versa. I know “racist” people who do not have “racist” parents. I also know black people who grew up in mostly white neighborhoods who grew up to dislike white people (because of their childhood expierences).
All that really matters is a person’s character.
Not their boyfriends, families, or friends. I think if we focus more on making our own wrongs right, then we will not have the time or energy
to bash anyone else. Especially someone who most of us have never met Like Lauryn Hill.
Before we judge the way she treats people we need to take a LONG hard look @ ourselves.

“May all beings be happy and safe,
May they all have tranquil minds.”

Just because Lauryn Hill doesn’t necessarily desire fame doesn’t mean she’s unhealthy. With the pressure that our society puts on celebrities (especially female celebrities) to be perfect human beings, it is hard to blame her. Behind the glamour, the money, and the illusion of universal acceptance in the world of American fame lies a depraved, heartless world that, as we’ve seen time and time again, leads many major stars from the center of social praise to the depths of unrelenting depression and insecurity. We expect more from hollywood than we do from our nation’s capitol. That is a position that many rational minds would find intimidating.
