Ah, the crazy life of a working actor! Matt Damon is a man who will go as far as he possibly can and needs to for a role. No matter what his latest project calls for, whether it be gaining or losing weight, using an accent, changing his hair, or even pretending to be gay, Damon will dive head first into any role that he takes on. And he’s not one to shy away from the risque.
His most recent role consists of him portraying a lover of the famous piano player, Liberace, in Behind the Candelabra, where the actor had to strip down on camera and have love scenes opposite Michael Douglas. Think that’s wild? So does Damon. But he’s taking it all in stride.
Damon spoke about some of the more graphic scenes he filmed with Douglas with Playboy magazine, candidly saying “For one scene, I had to come out of the pool, go over to Michael Douglas, straddle him on a chaise lounge and start kissing him. It’s not like I kiss him just once. We drew it up like a football plan.”
For a straight actor there’s got to be some air of discomfort or numbness when filming an intensely gay scene, right? If Damon had any of that, it never showed. When asked about the kissing scenes with Douglas, Damon simply answered, “Michael was a wonderful kisser.” Ha! Outstanding.
Although some actors tend to steer clear of sexuality-bending roles, Damon doesn’t seem to have a problem with being totally graphic onscreen. In fact, he hopes that the buzz around his work will over shadow any buzz about his personal life. “The narrative about me kind of goes, ‘He’s a boring married guy,’ which is great…People think I’m kind of vanilla and they leave me alone to work, have an actual private life and be a husband and dad.” As long as Damon keeps us on the edge of our seats with his acting roles, we’re just fine minimally admiring his private life and focusing on the work instead. Luckily, Damon knows just how to shock audiences in the best way possible.
The movie is set to release sometime next year, directed by Steven Soderbergh. The film will definitely not be Soderbergh’s first venture into the world of male nudity. So if the popularity of Magic Mike is any indication of the type of film Behind The Candelabra will be, then I’m sure audiences will be all over the HBO film.
While Matt Damon travels back and forth to shoot the film, he stopped to greet his fans waiting at the airport for him. So check out the gallery to see that. And we’ll keep you posted on details of his racy new role in Behind The Candelabra, until it releases!
