Actress Melanie Griffith was spotted earlier this week sporting a black eye, and speculation as to the injury went wild. There is a thankful reason for that.

Griffith, 52, had surgery to remove early-stage cancer from her face — thus leading to the black eye, her rep told the Associated Press Thursday. The very good news: the surgery was done early enough “to prevent further complications,” the AP reports.

That’s very good news! Congrats to Melanie, and lets hope she remains cancer free. She may want to think about dropping the smoking habit.
