Michael Phelps made some more history. The swimmer won the 200m IM, and by doing so he became the first man to win the same event at three Olympics in a row. Plenty of men have repeated in events, but nobody has won at three consecutive Olympiads.
In winning this event, Phelps also defeated Ryan Lochte in what is most likely their final face-off — they do not swim in the same race for the rest of the games, and Phelps will probably retire after the 2012 Olympics.
“To be able to win the gold medal and repeat three times is something pretty special,” Phelps said. “I’m pretty pleased with gold.”
As for Lochte, he said of his performance, “Yeah, I wanted to get all golds in my events, but you know it didn’t happen. I’m going to have to live with that and move on and learn from it, and try not to make the same mistakes in the next four years.”
Lochte plans to swim on to the 2016 Rio Games, but he’s going to make at least one important change. ”I’m going to be training differently,” he said. “I got a birthday tomorrow. It’s definitely time to take it down a little.”
Phelps now has a staggering total of 20 Olympic medals, including 16 gold, and the chance to win two more before his retirement at the end of the Games.
