Now that she’s a retired talk show host, Oprah Winfrey is taking a more hands on role in running her cable network, OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network). Because she was still filming her last season of The OprahWinfrey Show, Oprah has admittedly been “all in with one foot out the door” which has led to a few bumps during OWN’s launch, including low ratings. Another aspect of running her own network is working with others and stated:
“Over the years I had complete control,” she said. “It’s a little harder making a judgment as to what other shows can do. It’s about finding your particular flow and being able to connect to it.”
Cable executives have expressed that Winfrey had an intuitive management style that worked well for her TV show, but a cable channel “needs more organizational discipline.” And it seems like she’s acknowledged this, hiring Discovery Communications COO Paul Ligouri to help run the network.

And that is why Oprah is one of the richest women in America. She has the smarts and intuition to run a successful empire and knows when to change her game plan when needed. Oprah is interviewed by Paula Zahn at McCormick Place in Chicago, Illinois. June 16, 2011. Let’s hope OWN is a success!
