St James’ Palace confirmed yesterday that The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will call an apartment at Kensington Palace their official residence in London, according to E!. This is a temporary locale for the royal couple, who will only spend a few years in a two-bedroom apartment within the 17th century palace.
Prince and Princess Michael of Kent occupy a larger apartment/suite, consisting of five bedrooms and five reception rooms. Also shacking up at Kensington Palace (made up of a few apartments) are the Duke and Duchess of Kent and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester. William and Prince Harry resided here with their late mother, Princess Diana, after she divorced Prince Charles. He and Kate plan to move into their new digs sometime in the next two months, either before or after their official tour of North America. What’s more, they don’t have to pay rent since William is second in line to the throne, according to the Daily Mail.

“A number of options for longer-term solutions are still being considered. The couple’s main home will continue to be their house on Anglesey, and their Household Office will continue to be based at St. James’s Palace,” a rep explained, referring to Will and Kate’s rented farmhouse in the Welsh town. They’ll remain there for most of the next couple of years since Will is a Search and Rescue pilot with the Royal Air Force. Up until the announcement regarding Kensington Palace was made, Will and Kate bunked with Harry at Clarence House, the official residence of the Prince of Wales (Prince Charles) and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.
