Prison Ankle Bracelets, Drunk Driving, and Disgraced Beauty Queens are all the Rage

Miss USA Tara Conner just got out of rehab and appeared as a guest model at the Tadashi show. The repentant beauty pageant winner almost got dethroned after she was seen all over the New York club scene drinking up a storm and snorting cocaine. Also at the show was 18-year-old Miss Teen USA, Katie Blair, who came under fire for underage drinking and kissing Miss USA. As a result, she was dropped as a spokesperson for Mothers Against Drink Driving.

If you thought handcuff necklaces are hot, consider this. Actress Michelle Rodriguez attended the Marc Jacobs show sporting the signature accessory of the season: a court-imposed ankle bracelet! The former LOST cast member was court-ordered to wear the bracelet after a drunk-driving arrest in Hawaii. The bracelet registers her sweat for alcohol use.

The “healthy” models controversy is after the jump, along with some more photos of Michelle Rodriguez with her ankle bracelet look.

Speaking of drinking, designers posted signs backstage that said “No Smoking and No Drinking Under 21,” presumptively to promote healthier models. That is as unrelated to the anorexic model problem as posting a sign that warns about the danger of drinking too much water because you can drown. The deceased models who sparked the debate, Luisel Ramos and Ana Carolina Reston, succumbed to anorexia and anorexia-caused heart failure. It seems like the fashion industry is skirting the issue here to assuage their responsibility in their promotion of this sickly ideal.

They claim to promote healthy models but then require models to look anorexic to work. Although drinking and smoking are bad, the industry should be promoting normal body image instead. You don’t need to be 5’10 and 98 pounds to look good in clothes and work the runway. They are literally shrinking these models so skinny that they are dying on the runway! And teenage girls who see this in the media, think models are glamorous and want to be that skinny too. I think they should be promoting healthy models and prohibiting ones that look like famine victims. Then they can tackle the drinking and smoking. And the “hazards of drinking water” problem too.

She REALLY should have worn the Chanel ankle bracelet; it would have looked much more sophisticated……. And gone much better with the frock.
