Although the changes to ‘Project Runway All Stars’ made viewers do a double-take, things are getting better. New Heidi Klum doppleganger Angela Lindvall didn’t stumble over her lines as much and Izzac Mizrahi has followed in Michael Kors‘ sassy gay footsteps with the greatest of ease. The judges are proving to be a breath of fresh air and guest judges Mark Badgley & James Mischka were a welcome addition this episode.
The challenge was presented. Designers were to make deluxe beautiful opera gowns patterned after the style of Badgley Mischka. For some, the idea was exciting and viewers could probably predict who would perform the best in this round. For others, it was a complete disaster.
At Mood, April chose a red fabric just as Michael Costello found his own red materials. This made him change his mind and he went for black instead. Sweet P and Kara went for floral prints, which proved to be a mistake. Gordana had a unique beaded lavender number with an interesting structure on the bottom. Rami went with bright magenta, but his idea wasn’t executed with as much bang as his round one showstopper. Anthony had a beautifully draped white gown, but it was over styled and the lack of symmetry wasn’t ideal.
Fans always have their favorites. I’ve made no bones about my love for Mondo Guerra and Austin Scarlett. Mondo’s Betty Draper-esque silver 60′s gown with the kimono back and long train was my favorite, but my bias could be getting in the way. Still, there are other designers that thoroughly impressed me. Michael Costello was a judges favorite in his original season debut because he tends to makes miracles with his draping aesthetic. He can be obnoxious with his constant whining, but there are times when he works absolute magic. Tonight’s episode definitely showcased his brilliance.
Costello’s winning piece featured a feathered high neckline with embroidered beading along the waistline. The criss-cross draping feature along the front of the black jersey fabric made for one amazing silhouette. However, Austin Scarlett won the challenge with his gold lamé gown complimented with soft black tulle. It was a beautiful dress and more innovative than Costello’s, but it seemed a bit underwhelming in comparison. Georgiana from Marchesa was head over heels in love.
Sweet P and April landed in the bottom. Poor April made a bad choice in dying her fabric, which left her little time to perfect her construction of the bodice. It looked like a disaster. Sweet P’s terrible 70′s prom dress just didn’t compare to the radiance of the other pieces. Her sassy style is out and the judges aren’t taking any prisoners this season. Welcome to the big leagues!

I’m just in love with this season, Mondo better win :) But Rami, Anthony and Austin are really good, so its going to be really exciting. Even Kenley is doing well, but Mizrahi hinted in his recent Ferguson interview that we’re going to see some drama from her soon.
If only Tim Gunn had been the mentor this would have been amazing.
