It was the ultimate showdown.
Even though Dom and Bradon earned their spots to show collections at New York Fashion Week, the remaining designers still had to prove they are worthy.
On this episode of Lifetime’s Project Runway, Tim Gunn visited each of the designers’ hometowns to review their collections and give them advice.
First he saw Dom in Philidelphia and had lunch with her family at a restaurant where she works. He seemed impressed by her hard work, but when she showed him her progress with the collection he became worried. She was inspired by the film The Blade Runner and went with a retro future vibe. Dom had all of her silhouettes drawn up and had designed print fabric, but hadn’t ordered it yet or starting sewing pieces together. Tim helped her decide which prints she should order and told her to get to work.
Next, Tim visited Bradon in Los Angeles and met his adorable fiancé. Bradon was going after the juxtaposition of winter meeting spring, ice and snow mixed with flora and fauna. Tim was a little worried, but overall impressed with Bradon’s progress. Part of the challenge given to the designers is to create a piece from unconventional materials and Bradon’s piece seems to weigh down his flowing collection.
Tim then went to see Alexandria in San Mateo, California. She is working with young kids and teaching them sewing and design. They’ve created dolls of each person from this season and Tim Gunn finds the dolls spot on and hilarious. Alexandria’s collection is modern and innovative. She has over thirty pieces which surprises Tim.
Next up, Gunn went to see Helen in New Jersey. She was very confident about her work and excited to show him. When Tim met with her family he remarked about how she is either extremely confident or extremely questioning about her work. The family agreed. Helen took a photo of her boyfriend’s eye and created a print. She used clairvoyance as a theme and featured capes as her wow moment. She also included the color red.
Lastly was Justin who lives in Raleigh, North Carolina. His collection was themed from his hearing issues, from not being able to hear anything for eighteen years, to receiving a cochlear implant and then hearing the world more afterward. He used 3D printing to create amazing accessories that almost appear as sound waves. Tim was very impressed.
Upon returning to New York, Dom and Bradon are able to take a break while the other three prepare to show the judges three pieces that best represent their collections. Between filming days, Tim Gunn apparently took a fall in the subway on some stairs and suffers a few cuts and bruises to the face. Can you imagine witnessing Tim Gunn take a tumble like that? My heart would break into a million pieces! Luckily, Tim is a champ and shrugged it off like the classy badass that he is.
First to show to the judges was Alexandria who sent out a black outfit with awesome pants and black leather vest, a taupe colored outfit with cool fish hook clasps, and another beige outfit with a suede and silk jacket.
Next up was Helen’s collection of a little black dress with cap sleeves, a red dress with an acrylic belt and cape, as well as a strapless oddly designed dress with the print of her boyfriend’s eye.
Justin’s three pieces were a white outfit featuring pants, tank, and vest as well as his signature 3d print jewelry. Next was a black dress that had a 3d belt and paint splattered along the bottom. Lastly, his unconventional materials piece was a dress made of plastic tubes, but appeared to look like furr from afar.
The judges praised Justin’s innovation and loved his work. They questioned Alexandria’s color choices and the fact that her clothes are commercial and not runway appropriate. Zac Posen said that those type of clothes are already popular and available, that a designer should be one step ahead of the curve. Helen’s collection was disappointing to the judges and they felt that her print piece was confusing and odd.
In the end they kept Justin and Alexandria before sending Helen on her way. Helen seemed shocked and who wouldn’t be considering they had her win a few challenges? The judges built her up when they shouldn’t have. They should have sent Helen home before they ever sent Kate home.
