Ricky Martin has admitted that he used to bully gay people while growing up. The 41-year-old Grammy-winner struggled for years to accept his sexuality. The singer revealed to GQ Australia that growing up with Roman Catholic beliefs filled him with shame and he was very angry and rebellious.
Martin said that he acted against his own impulses and used to feel ashamed looking at gay men, while thinking that he wasn’t like them and didn’t want to even become like them.
He admitted that he had internalized homophobia and wanted to get away from confrontation. Martin made his committed relationship with stock broker Carlos Gonzlez Abella public in 2010.
In the article, Martin discusses wanting to contribute to the new generation that just may be looking up to him, “I look at them and see myself as a kid. There’s so much fear, anxiety and insecurity. When you’re younger, if someone says you can do something better or improve something, you automatically take it personally. Straightaway, you go, ‘am I not good enough?’ Doubts and fears constantly plague you.”
