After a long political career and life, Edward M. Kennedy, lost his battle to brain cancer and has passed away. As a member of the most highly visible political American family, Kennedy experienced his share of scandal and personal tragedy, but endured with a 47-year career in the Senate, which earned him the nickname “Lion of the Senate,” for being such an effective legislator.
Upon hearing the news of the death of the Democratic Senator of Massachusetts, President Barack Obama hailed him as “the greatest United States senator of our time.”
Obama–who received a very public endorsement from Kennedy during his presidential campaign–added, “An important chapter in our history has come to an end. Our country has lost a great leader, who picked up the torch of his fallen brothers and became the greatest United States Senator of our time.”
