The Difference Between A Looter And A Finder

September 1st, 2005 // 40 Comments

According to the wires, it’s black people and white people. This is who we get our news from people. Just plain sad.

  1. LuvChoo

    Not touching this one.

  2. angie

    can’t get over this one…

  3. Laura Lord Belle

    Argh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Insipid. As Salon notes, the person who was labeled a looter was actually seen by the photographer looting the store. The others, apparently, were not.

    http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2005/09/01/photo_controversy/index_np.html?x

  5. doofus

    disgusting…

and of course, if the photog didn’t actually SEE the white people “looting”, then there’s NO WAY that they were, right?

I’m sure those white people were able to find a store that was open and selling food.

And people wonder why there is still racsim today…our own freakin’ media is perpetuating it!

  6. Antigone

    check yourselves for anti-white racism. it’s a 2-way street.

  7. anon

    thats terrible.

Looting= tvs, cameras, electronics, excessive clothing, alcohol etc.

Finding= food, a few pair of shoes, drugs you need to take to live, clean dry clothing.

  8. doofus

    antigone…

while I agree with you that black on white racism does exist, it does NOT in this case.

and I’ve NEVER seen the media put forth something as BLATANT as this (consciously or UN) toward white people.

it goes along with the “missing woman syndrome”. A pretty white woman missing (natalie holloway) gets TONS of press…young black and hispanic women go missing EVERY DAY, and NOT ONE ever got press like Holloway is getting. Laci Peterson is another example. how much press did she get? how many black and hispanic women get killed by their husbands? and how much press do they get?

I realize that, in general society, racism goes both ways…in high school, I would even see tension between black people who had differnt skin tones. however, in the media, it’s not that way. stereotypes are perpetuated…white people FIND things…black people STEAL things. it’s crap.

  9. cakeboy

unfortunately, salon has used these pics
out of context. Three days ago, Yahoo News had a
slideshow of photos from New Orleans.
Both the man in the top pic and the two in the bottom were wading thru water after recieving bread and bottled water. DONT believe everything you see and hear.

  10. Get real

This is an example of a journalists’ predjudice against blacks. But let’s face it people, the majority of people that are left in New Orleans are low income, and black. Last time I saw the news coverage of the people who were actually taking things off of shelves and carrying brand new electronics, the MAJORITY of them happened to be black.

Is it any wonder why you would see this reflected in the news articles pertaining this story?

  11. Sara

these are two different new sources, ap, and afp. yahoo is just compiling, little wonder they arent using the same vernacular.

  12. Sam

They both should have been called looters. That is very Sad.

  13. fat mary kate

hahaahhahahaha @ all of your anti racism bullshit. the reality is that the blacks are the ones stealin new nikes & bags of clothes and computers when in all reality they aint got a damn place to wear em at. truth is their too ignorant to even notice that. quit lyin to your damn selves. that shit is animalistic and disgusting.

  14. Puppy

Two separate people wrote captions for two separate photo agencies. Complaining people are dumb.

  15. Kevin

What the hell is New Jordans and electronics going to do for u . If ur trying to get some food and water for ur family go 4 it . These black people are cheesing for the camera like wats up family , don’t I look thuggish and cool . Why didn’t they leave the area when they had the chance . They are sickning animals .

  16. boogerbutt

Who cares if they are black or white…they
were told to leave town prior to the storm.
It’s there own damn fault they have to loot or find anything.

  17. phuckphace

I love the fact that these assholes are stealing tv’s and electronics. Shows you how stupid the people in the south are. What are you going to plug your new tv into asshole?? There won’t be power for months!!! Also, everyone is being evacuated and the whole city will need to be bulldozed and rebuilt. So what good is that new tv dumbass….

  18. SG

no excuse for the looting of the nikes and flat screens, but most of the people that didn’t evacuate, couldn’t. They are poor, they have no cars. How were they supposed to get out?? I sure didn’t read anything anywhere about the city bussing them out prior to the hurricane.

  19. White Girl in Central Mississippi

So predictable. Of course everyone else in America thinks we Southerns still live like KKK members. “Whites are finding and Blacks are stealing.” Please, what is the point in stealing boxes of Nike shoes? Like that’s going to help you live through the night. I am 3 hours from New Orleans, in Jackson, living through this, and know people who are living and dying through this. The reason it looks like we “left all the african-americans in New Orleans to die” is because that is all that is left there. Everyone else had enough sense to get out of there. And yes, some were not able to leave for different reasons, and that is understandable. But I am completely disgusted at the behavior of these people. Help is on the way, its just hard when even we, in Jackson, don’t have power, and the roads to get down to you are blocked off or destroyed. Unbelievable. Please, shoot at people who are trying to help you. That makes complete sense. I love the mentality of everyone up north. Yep, us White Republicans: Out to spread our racism during the most devastating event of our lives. I can’t wait just hop up to the BP and wait in line for 3 hours to fill my car up with $5 gas and ride around town all day. So ignorant.

  20. White Girl in Central Mississippi

And people wonder Southerners look like dumb asses. Look at how we’re protrayed on t.v. As racists idiots. I hate CNN.

  21. a regular

I dont understand how people can be surprised by this…this message board alone has already displayed racism over what colour skin children one should or should not adopt, and making racial slurs along the way…

how is the media any different?

  22. Crystal

I saw Harry Connick Jr. comment (he’s a N.O. native) on the news saying basically he cannot pass any judgement on people who are doing the looting.

I agree with him. These people have lost everything, and there is not one single one of us that I know who can possibly know what this is like. If I were in their shoes, I could possibly be one of the looters… not one of the gun-toting shooting looters, but a looter looking to own something, anything that isn’t completely destroyed.

  23. sashay

Taking food, drugs, dry clothing and shoes is NOT looting, it is surviving and trying to maintain some semblance of dignity amongst the choas. If these people who have lost every single f–ing thing they’ve had help themselves to some gold chains and water-logged televisions so be it. Their lives will be chaotic and unstable for the next few months. I won’t begrudge them some material items that will be written off as total losses anyway.

The folks stealing guns, shooting @ guardsman and carjacking need to be shot on the spot however for taking advantage of this dire situation!

  24. 510Bombshell

    anon said it right.

  25. White Girl in North-Central Mississippi

To the other white girl in central Mississippi, from a fellow white Mississippi girl: Why do you think that impoverished black people are “the only ones left there?” Hmmm? Because “everyone else had enough sense to leave”???? THAT’S your answer? The people who were able to leave had the means and mobility to leave, and places to go to. It breaks my heart that you don’t have power, but do you really believe that needing gas to put in your car is the same sort of desperation as needing food to put in your stomach while you sit in dirty, toxic water and wait to be rescued, knowing you might not have a place to return to when the worst (depending on what your version of “the worst” is…) is over?

Don’t spew that “I hate CNN” nonsense. I bet you hold Trent Lott in revery. He’s a hell of a lot worse for any dire situation black people– and all Mississippians, for that matter– might face than the media you spit on in your ill-conceived, illogical rant.

Perhaps if you didn’t refer to white people as “everyone else… with enough sense,” non-Southerners would start to think of us Mississippians as more than simple-minded racists.

P.S. The roads going headed from the north into Jackson aren’t blocked. Look elsewhere for sympathy if your biggest concern is gas or CNN…

  26. Southern Girl

Just in case you didnt know CNN is based in Atlanta, so i dont think CNN would portray southerners as racist, because they ARE southern themselves.

However, instead of worrying about whether or not the “media” is racist, we need to be worrying about the people. EVERYONE in New Orleans has lost everything, not just blacks or whites. Instead of bashing the media who is out there bringing us the story and putting their own lives in danger, we need to be helping take donations or giving blood or something to help these people! Honestly, there are bigger problems right now than a couple of captions!

PS to White Girl in North Central Mississippi: we should have sympathy for everyone involved in this tragedy, not just the ones who were hit the worst

  27. White Girl in North Central Mississippi

Yes, Southern Girl–I should’ve been nicer. I really do feel sorry for everybody–was just angered by the fact that people are so mad at those who are stuck so tragically in New Orleans, by no real fault of their own. I know there’s serious looting going on, but I do think a lot of the “looting” is simply people taking what they need to survive. I take back my mean-spirited p.s. , and apologize to the other Mississippi girl, but stick by the rest of what I said. Also, every time I talk to someone who’s not down here, I try to encourage a Red Cross donation, and I hope it’s helping. DONATE DONATE. Or give items if not money. I heard baby stuff (specifically diapers) and Ensure formula for the elderly are most requested right now. And supposedly if you send lots of stuff, you should separate it into parcels meant for an individual–so there’s a more even distribution and people won’t fight over it. At least that’s what NPR was saying. Sorry for being rude earlier.

  28. Bite me

Since when to they sell flat screen tv’s and nike sneakers at the GROCERY store Dumb Nuts?!!! Yes even on this site I see racism is alive and kicking. Move past the negative comments about people. Work on helping your fellow americans. Geez and Yes I sent in my donation today.
    Sashay said it best.

  29. I am ashamed of any bickering during this crippling time for anyone in Mississippi or Louisiana. We know this has become a desparate time of survival. Pure survival! call it whatever- looting or finding, but anyone with half a brain can see the Hell, dehydration and starvation that is taking place no matter the color of the persons experiencing it.

  30. Get over it...

First of all, these are coming from two different sources. Secondly, how do we know the race of the writers?!?! Just another excuse to turn everything into a race issue. Sad.

  31. Harry Hands

    knuckle-draggers unite!!!

  32. black girl from nj

well, yes, if you’re black, chances are everything is filtered through racial issues, ‘Get over it,” so you get used to it. Plus, the caption says looting a grocery store. What’s the box he’s holding? Are we so sure its not food either? Yea, i do see most things as a race issue. And the first white Miss. girl is the exact stereotype northern wealthy minorities have about poor or middle class white southerners, so its good to see a two dimensional charicature come to life. You should be so proud!

  33. Puleaase!

    Let me just say…

CNN is the worst, most-biased, republican channel there is in America. I think it’s sad that there are ppl out there who’d use CNN as their main source of news…they only tell you what they want you to hear, everything else is censored.

Secondly, racism is a lot more prominent than what most think. The saddest part of it all is that everyone pretends to be open-minded, but deep down they are still a bunch of racists and it shines through on message boards like these. I’m not saying Im a saint, but some of the things that come out on this board makes me so sick to the stomach I’m almost ashamed that I post here and communicating with these people.

  34. Ummm...

I think you have CNN confused with Fox?

  35. Jean-Baptiste

Those comments are from TWO DIFFERENT news agencies. The agency that reported “finding” is from Europe…I doubt they know what the word looting means.

  36. ERIN

How can u people sit here and talk about race issues when there are people dying and needing help/ I am from long island NY and i am white (thats means nothing to me but it seems to matter to some people on this board) and i am SICK OF THIS SHIT! all those people who need help right now, i consider my people too. they are americans just like all of us and everyone is trying to help out. why don’t we look at that, and if we want to argue about anything it would be the fact that the only color bush sees is green he don’t give a shit about black white purple or anything as long as you have a deep pocket or power he’ll suck ur dick, and THATS WHAT MAKES ME SICK. how can we be yelling about racism when our whole country hass been tyring to help out/ we have raised over 200 mill all together and still people are helping out. Now i am only 22 and have a 10 dollar an hour job and i still donated $75 dollars out of my own pocket and i still feel like i haven’t done shit. it makes me cry. b/c the only racism i see here are the people making that the issue. no one sees color anymore they see money it’s sad but true. and for that CNN bullshit just ignore and help, the news are going say anything to get ratings.

  37. cjp

Let try and have some sense here people, yes the photos are out of context but aren’t we missing the real issue here?

Why were so many people left behind? I may live many miles away here in the UK, but I thought I heard the major of New Orleans call for the city to be evacuated BEFORE the storm struck. Where were the troops to airlift people out then? Take a look at this link: http://junkyardblog.net/archives/week_2005_08_28.html why the hell wasn’t there a soldier in each one of those buses taking people out? I don’t understand how people can be left behind simply because they can’t afford to leave! In england I live about 25 miles from the nearest costal city -I know I’d have been driving those people out who had no other way to leave. The goverment knew what was very likly to happen -it was their job to try and get EVERYONE out. They failed before the hurricane struck -far more then they have failed afterwards.

And before you condemn those stealing TV’s clothes and trainers or raiding cash registers, just wonder how many of those people didn’t have insurance -home or medical- how many were so poor they barely had a real home anyway? Are the goverment gonna simply build them a new place to live? Or is some greedy bastard gonna start aquiring land because many can’t afford to rebuild on it? People have to survive after the waters have cleared too, and those shops have insurance -they haven’t lost anywhere near has much as the people “robbing” them.

How many homeless people die on the city streets of America every day? How many people who were living close to that are now destined for that?

The world most people seem to live in is just a fragile shell keeping reality at bay -this is what happens when it falls apart.

What’s happening in New Orleans right now isn’t looting or racism -it’s basic human instinct. It’s the reality of life most of us are lucky never to see.

We should stop arguing about this, and those of us that can -many can’t I’m sure, but more can- should do something to help.

  38. You People Are Assholes

Most of the commenters deserve to be chained to car bumbers in the New Orleans. Simple-minded twits.

I won’t even bother to point out all your fuckin’ illogical bullshit ‘cept for this real simple one that you might be able to wrap your mind around if you really, really try: It doens’t matter who, where, what, how many places the photos came from…the issue is about racism as a sociological issue, not about the opinion of Johnny Niggerwhipper the racist shutterbug who lives down the road.

    Idiots.

  39. guard pilot

As a National Guard Pilot who flew over the devastated city and pulled people off of roofs, I can tell you that many of the homes we removed people from had cars in the driveway. I guess they thought it couldn’t happen.

  40. racism

I have also lived in black communities. Not because I choose to but because of financial constraints.
I have been called slope, chink, rice eyes and many other terms which I can’t repeat here….all by black people I have been attacked coming from dinner , jumped when I refused change, refuse a cigarette my vehicle vandalized repeatedly.

They had a choice and they used the laziest one available because every black person has developed a sense of entitlement. Whine “America owes me because my grandfathers were slaves”

Cant you figure out something better to do for your family and your babies momma, other than hanging around selling crack and water, while waiting for something to be handed to you?

Horseshit….get a job, pay taxes and be a good parent and take care of not only you and yours but also your neighborhood
    ………………….Just like EVERYONE else
