Can the AARP stop sending me stuff? Thanks. I’m 26, not 62.
It’s been a couple weeks since I’ve written my column so I never got a chance to fill you in on my New York trip. It seems so long ago though so I’ll just throw the necessary, highly usable information your way.
We saw three Broadway shows, the first was Spring Awakening, the new Duncan Sheik musical, which I thought was decent. The story of sexual curiosity and coming-of-age seemed a bit trite and something I’ve seen done better before, but the rock music was solid and the cast energetically gave it their all. One of the main guys, John Gallagher Jr. (Moritz), I thought overdid the “acting” and reminded me of Puck from Real World San Francisco. But apparently, he is the toast of Broadway, so what do I know?
A few nights later, we saw the Tony-award-winning Avenue Q. I really wanted to like this show more, but I honestly wasn’t that impressed. I was chuckling a lot and the second act won me over a bit, but really, take away the puppets and you’re left with some goofy songs done in whiny voices you wouldn’t ever really listen to. But it did win the Tony, so what do I know?
On a whim, we checked out the TKTS booth and I was very excited to see we could still get ½ price tickets to The Color Purple. I didn’t care where we sat, I needed to see this show. The Color Purple delivered everything and more. An amazingly heart-warming, endearing and funny story packaged with beautiful songs and elaborate rotating sets, this production was tight and on a whole other level of Broadway–a level on which all shows are produced by Oprah, and maybe a few Off-Broadway productions by Gayle.
More on Wayne’s New York City adventure’s after the jump.
The rest of the trip was spent eating a lot of deli sandwiches and going to just few bars; Beige at B Bar, Therapy and a couple others I wasn’t in a state to remember. I also helped cover the red carpet for the GLAAD Media Awards which I feel like I’ve already talked enough about on this blog.
Now I’m back to the same old tricks in Los Angeles. This week, we launched the first ever Celebrity Buzz Meter which will become a weekly interactive countdown show. Send me your vote on what celebrity you think should be included next week via e-mail to vote@socialitelife.celebuzz.com.
Being the expert I am on the Rolling Stones and cocaine, I was of course the go-to guy for CBS2′s story on Keith Richards snorting his father. Or as my friend Dudley put it “The off-kilter camera angle and the slow zoom in and out let me know that you were cool, hip, and someone to trust with this story.” See it here. I don’t know why they edited out my pun ‘This will all BLOW over!’ Genius.

Hilarious…I would LOVE it if Gayle had some off broadway shows. Sounds like a good time in the city!
