To celebrate the Blu-Ray and DVD release of Madonna‘s directorial debut, W.E., SOCIALITE LIFE is giving away copies to five lucky readers. The film draws a parallel between Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson‘s controversial relationship, and a modern-day woman trapped in a loveless marriage, who strikes up a romance with a Russian security guard.
Edward VIII abdicated the throne on December 10th, 1936 in order to married the twice-divorced Simpson. ”I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge my duties as king as I would wish to do without the help and support of the woman I love,” he said to his subjects over a radio address on December 11th.
Edward VIII’s younger brother, Albert (“Bertie”) ascended the throne and became King George VI, which made the then-princess Elizabeth heir to the British throne.
