You Spin Me Round: Eight Tracks

June 26th, 2007 // 5 Comments

I listen to a ton of music every day, and, as a result, my “favorites list” constantly evolves. As quickly as my new favorites cycle in, the old favorites fade away. These are my top eight tracks for the month of June.

1. Paolo Nutini – “Jenny Don’t Be Hasty”

I’ll admit I’m late to the party, just recently learning of twenty-year-old Scottish singer Paolo Nutini. After hearing he was scheduled to open up for Amy Winehouse’s fall tour, I picked up his 2006 disc These Streets and fell completely in love.

2. Kanye West – “Stronger”

I have a love/hate relationship with Kanye West; the more press he gets, the less I like him. I despised Late Registration, and assumed Kanye’s narcissistic tracks would never darken my iPod again… but I was wrong.

I’m not sure if “Stronger” is a mind-blowing track because of the sample from one of Daft Punk’s finest singles (“Harder, Better, Faster, Better”) or because of Kanye’s irresistible offer – “you can be my black Kate Moss tonight.” Either way, I’m hooked.

Numbers 3 – 8, plus a free Amy Winehouse MP3, are after the jump.

3. Yeah Yeah Yeahs – “Down Boy”

Although this track is a few years old, it resurfaced as the first single from the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s EP Is Is. It took a couple listens for me to really warm up to it, but Karen O’s sparkling vocals and a sexy, slow build up make this track a favorite.

4. The Libertines – “Ha Ha Wall” (Kissy Sell Out Remix)

I’m a total sucker for remix artists–Girl Talk, Ratatat, MSTRKRFT, Flosstradamus–I simply can’t resist a good remix or mash up. UK college student Kissy Sell Out is my number one this week.

5. Mission of Burma – “That’s When I Reached for My Revolver”

Possibly the best post-punk band in the history of music. This song stayed in constant rotation in my stereo for almost ten years.

6. The Subways – “Staring at the Sun”

This track is a couple years old, but I only came across it recently. Of course, it’s not as good as the original TV on the Radio version, but it’s still a delicate, beautiful acoustic tune, perfect for a summer day.

7. Go! Team – “Grip Like a Vice”

I don’t know anyone who can resist this Brighton six-piece.

8. Amy Winehouse – “Hey Little Rich Girl”

Amy Winehouse’s cover of The Specials track “Hey Little Rich Girl” only appeared as the B-side to the British “Back to Black” single, but it’s good enough to be a single on its own. Amy’s version of The Specials’ “Monkey Man” is also floating around on various blogs, although it’s not nearly as good as “Hey Little Rich Girl.”

Now that listed my recent favorites, I would love to know yours. What have you been listening to recently? What are your top eight tracks for June?

I think this is one of the most outrageous statements reguarding Kanye West I have ever heard. Something along the lines of “This track made me physically ill” would be more appropirate.

Kanye is just another no talent “producer” who has enough money to license other peoples hooks and throw some rhymes over them. There are a million good lyricist out there. Its not like its hard to come up with a modern day hip hop chorus.

And while I usually dislike most of his music, this song has stooped to a new low with some of the most pathetic sampling and production value I have ever heard.

Whoever is responsible for paying the music editor on this site should reconsider immediatly…BECAUSE THE DONT KNOW WHAT THE HELL THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT. You might as well be writing for rolling stone.

Sorry, Kellen, not agreeing with YOUR opinion does not constitute “not knowing what the hell they are talking about.” Your self-important, elitist diatribe is tired. As someone who has read Alyk’s work on a variety of topics over the last two years, on several sites, I can say quite easily that she does, indeed, know what the hell she is talking about. And if you think it’s “easy” to write a piece of music, hip hop or not, clearly you’ve never done so.

    I’ll play along.

I’m actually the exact opposite. I often end up listening to the same things all the time, and it’s sometimes hard for new music to make its way into my rotation. I’ve got at least a half dozen unopened CDs sitting around my computer room. Anyway, these are probably the eight songs I’ve listened to the most this month; and after I said all that about listening to the same things repeatedly, most of these are actually newish:

    1. Lavender Diamond, “Oh No”
    2. Band of Horses, “Monsters”
    3. Wilco, “Please Be Patient With Me”
    4. The Blow, “Fists Up!”
    5. Modest Mouse, “Parting of the Sensory”
    6. Billy Bragg and Wilco, “Ingrid Bergman”
    7. Explosions in the Sky, “Welcome, Ghosts”
    8. Notorious B.I.G., “Friend of Mine”

    *crash of thunder and lightening*
AND Kellen Berrigan has spoken! Jeez, when did you find out that you rule the world?
