Authorities are seeking a DNA sample from soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo as part of the investigation into allegations that he sexually assaulted a woman in Las Vegas in 2009.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police have issued a warrant for a DNA sample to see if it matches DNA found on a dress, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday, citing a law enforcement source.
A spokesperson for LVMPD said the department has submitted an official request to Italian authorities, but that no other detail would be released because the investigation is ongoing.
Ronaldo, 33, plays for the Turin-based soccer club Juventus.
Ronaldo's lawyer, Peter S. Christiansen, said, “Mr. Ronaldo has always maintained, as he does today, that what occurred in Las Vegas in 2009 was consensual in nature, so it is not surprising that DNA would be present, nor that the police would make this very standard request as part of their investigation.”
Investigators are seeking the DNA sample as part of a recently reopened investigation into accusations by an American woman, Kathryn Mayorga, who said Mr. Ronaldo raped her in a Las Vegas hotel room in 2009 and later paid her $375,0000 for her silence.
