Comedian John Mulaney, by his own admission, has neither children nor musical abilities—and yet his latest project is a musical children’s variety special.
As the comedian explained to Jimmy Fallon on Monday’s Tonight Show, he wants the special to be reminiscent of the Sesame Street he grew up on—”which was that funky, like, Art Garfunkel and Grover and a girl named Gina would be, like, leaning against a stoop smoking a cigarette.”
It sounds like this special is going to be a wild ride, as was the interview itself, in which Mulaney’s answers to his host’s questions often spiraled into anecdotes that unfolded a lot like his stand-up—tales, for instance, of being terrified of Robert De Niro as a child, and of getting rejected by Stevie Nicks in spectacular fashion.
Mulaney said Stevie Nicks was the only guest star he really wanted on the special but couldn’t get. “She is a magical being,” he said, “but when she passes on a TV project, she really passes on it.”
