Netflix has officially greenlit Enigma Variations, a limited series adaptation of André Aciman‘s bestselling 2017 novel — and Aaron Taylor-Johnson (28 Years Later, Nosferatu) is set to headline, succeeding Jeremy Allen White, who was originally attached to star.
Yes, we’re going from one smoldering, three-named actor to another. Hollywood really does have a type.
The limited series stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Paul, a man remade by the lovers who ignite and undo him across ten transformative years. It’s described as “an intimate yet sweeping portrait of masculinity, sexuality, and modern love — and in a world of endless choices, it asks the question: will we know when we’ve found the one?”
Heady stuff. Aciman really doesn’t do casual situationships.

Like in the book, Paul is sexually fluid as he alternates between a male and a female partner. Think less Ross and Rachel, more literary European existential crisis with significantly better scenery. The novel charts Paul’s loves as “consuming and covetous” through settings ranging from southern Italy to a snowbound New England campus to New York City, with anonymous encounters, lingering passions, and raw desire punctuating every chapter. So yes — this is going to be a lot.
Enigma Variations has been in development at Netflix since January 2025. Jeremy Allen White was initially attached to play the lead role and executive produce, but left the project late last year. A casting search for a replacement was launched, with Taylor-Johnson entering negotiations soon thereafter.
Apparently, when you need someone to smolder through a decade of passion and heartbreak on screen, the options really do narrow pretty quickly.

Somewhat shockingly, Netflix press materials did not highlight failed 2024 franchise-launcher Kraven when listing Taylor-Johnson’s bona fides, instead pointing toward films like 28 Years Later and Nosferatu. Can’t say we blame them. We’re all trying to forget Kraven happened.
This marks the American series debut for the English actor, who has several films coming up, including Werwulf, Blood On Snow, and Cry To Heaven. In other words, Taylor-Johnson is going through what can only be described as a moment — and Netflix is betting big on it.
The limited series is written and executive produced by A.K. Shuman (The Wheel of Time, Carrie Soto Is Back) and directed by Oliver Hermanus (The History of Sound). Michael Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer executive produce for Media Res, alongside Aciman and Monica Levinson.

The show is the latest addition to Netflix’s growing slate of romantic dramas, which includes Bridgerton, Virgin River, and the newly ordered This Summer Will Be Different. Netflix has apparently decided it is fully, unapologetically in the yearning business.
Since the book takes place in Italy, New York, and England, the series will likely film across these locations. Production is expected to kick off in June 2026, with the series unlikely to appear on Netflix’s watch lists until late 2027.
So yes — patience, like Paul’s lovers, will be required.
