Adam Lambert didn’t RSVP. He just showed up.
The singer crashed the George Michael tribute at the 2026 MTV VMAs on Sunday night (September 27, 2026), even though he hadn’t been announced as part of the performance before he walked out onstage.
And honestly? Thank God he did.
The segment, staged at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, was sold as a Raye, Sombr and Teddy Swims affair. Orville Peck handled the intro, and he didn’t bury the lede.
“George Michael was a pop god,” Peck declared. He also reminded viewers that MTV once ran a disclaimer before “I Want Your Sex.”

Borrowing the man’s actual jacket is a bold flex. Whether the vocals matched the wardrobe depends on who you ask.
Raye, who had already performed earlier in the night, took on the Aretha Franklin duet “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me).” Teddy Swims then delivered his version of “Careless Whisper.”
MTV was smitten. “Nothing careless about the way @teddyswims took on this George Michael classic,” the network posted.
Then came the twist.
Lambert hit the stage for “Freedom,” joined by fellow queer artists Saint Harison, Meek and MNEK, with Sombr, Raye and Swims returning after their solo moments. One fan clocked him “walking out in that fringe with a purpose.”
Here’s why that entrance mattered.
Before the show, fans slammed the VMAs because none of the announced performers had publicly identified as LGBTQ+, and many felt the community was being snubbed.
One Reddit user argued the show should have gotten “someone like Sam Smith or Troye Sivan involved.”
Lambert, apparently, was listening. He’d teased the moment with a cryptic Instagram story featuring “Freedom! ’90.”

The room agreed. Several audience members rose to their feet during the performance.
So did the internet. “Adam Lambert was the only one who did George justice,” one fan wrote, as online reactions praised Lambert while taking aim at Sombr.

The pedigree behind the moment was real. Music director Adam Blackstone, who assembled Super Bowl halftime shows for Dr. Dre and Rihanna, put the tribute together.
So was the history. Michael won the Video Vanguard award in 1989, with Madonna presenting. He died of heart failure at 53 over Christmas 2016.
Let’s not pretend the timing is purely sentimental, either. The live album George Michael: The Faith Tour drops November 6, with a feature film of the same name hitting U.S. theaters December 11.
The kids got the booking. Lambert got the standing ovation.
