NEED TO KNOW

  • Barack Obama’s interview sparked confusion after he suggested aliens might be real, leading to a viral response online.
  • During a podcast, he claimed, ‘They’re real, but I haven’t seen them,’ implying no evidence of extraterrestrial life during his presidency.
  • After the uproar, Obama clarified on Instagram that while life likely exists somewhere in the universe, he saw no proof of alien visits.

Well, that escalated quickly. One minute, Barack Obama is doing a friendly podcast appearance, the next, he’s issuing a full Instagram clarification because the entire internet thinks he just confirmed we’re not alone in the universe.

The whole mess started Saturday when Obama sat down with progressive podcaster Brian Tyler Cohen for what seemed like a standard interview. Things took a turn during a “lightning round” when Cohen asked point-blank: “Are aliens real?”

“They’re real, but I haven’t seen them,” Obama responded, before adding that they’re not being kept at Area 51. “There’s no underground facility, unless there’s this enormous conspiracy,” he continued, suggesting they might have hidden it from the president.

Naturally, the internet lost its mind.

By Sunday evening (February 15, 2026), Obama was damage-controlling on Instagram. “I was trying to stick with the spirit of the speed round,” he explained in a post accompanying the viral clip. What did he actually mean? The universe is massive, so statistically speaking, life probably exists somewhere out there. But actually visiting Earth? That’s a different story.

“The distances between solar systems are so great that the chances we’ve been visited by aliens is low,” Obama clarified, adding that he saw zero evidence of extraterrestrial contact during his eight years in office. Really!

This isn’t Obama’s first rodeo with alien questions. Back in 2021, on The Late Late Show with James Corden, he admitted the first thing he did upon becoming president was ask about aliens. The answer he got? A polite “no” after some research.

When Cohen asked what Obama’s first question was as president, he laughed and confirmed: “Where are the aliens?” At least he’s consistent about his curiosity.

The timing couldn’t be more fitting. Congress has been holding hearings about UFOs, polls show nearly half of Americans think the government is hiding UFO evidence, and conspiracy theories about Area 51 refuse to die. Obama’s off-the-cuff comments poured gasoline on that particular fire.

So to recap: Obama believes alien life probably exists somewhere in the vast cosmos, but no, he didn’t meet any during his presidency, and no, they’re not chilling in Nevada. Everyone can calm down now.
