  • Britney Spears photographed standing through SUV sunroof at 45 mph on the 101 Freeway.
  • A source defends the freeway stunt as harmless fun tied to her Southern childhood.
  • Incident comes months after her DUI charge was reduced to a “wet reckless” plea.

Britney Spears is standing by her decision to stand through a sunroof — literally.

The pop icon, 44, sent onlookers into a frenzy Thursday when she was photographed rising fully upright through the sunroof of a black Mercedes SUV as it cruised down the 101 Freeway near Studio City at roughly 45 mph, according to the Daily Mail.

Spears reportedly climbed out of the vehicle while it was traveling in traffic near Coldwater Canyon, stretching her arms across the roofline as her blonde hair whipped in the wind. Witnesses said she remained above the roof for close to two minutes before the SUV exited the freeway and pulled into a nearby gas station.

Now a source close to the singer is speaking out to defend the freeway stunt, insisting there was nothing sinister behind it.

“Britney just went through the sunroof for a quick moment, she wanted to see what the traffic was about up ahead because the cars came to a stop,” the source told the Daily Mail. “She wanted to see how long they would be delayed.”

The insider went further, framing the moment as an innocent throwback to Spears’ childhood.

“She used to do this all the time as a kid growing up in the South, she loves having the warm wind blow through her hair in the summer, it’s fun,” the source said. “She is having a fun summer and is happy, she is in a good place. If it’s illegal to put your head through a sunroof, she doesn’t know it! She didn’t mean to do anything bad.”

The photos have taken on extra weight given the timing. Spears was arrested on DUI-related charges in March, and the case was resolved in May when she pleaded guilty to a reduced “wet reckless” charge. She was sentenced to 12 months of probation, hit with a fine, and ordered to complete a DUI education course.

Spears also addressed the moment herself on Instagram, posting cryptically that she was “arching my back to the heavens to god trying to get back all the years I missed.”

She was not driving during the freeway incident.
