Britney Spears was arrested in Ventura County, California, on Wednesday night (March 4, 2026) for a DUI, law enforcement sources told TMZ. The pop superstar was handcuffed by the California Highway Patrol around 9:30 p.m. and booked by the sheriff’s department around 3 a.m.
She was released shortly after 6 a.m. Thursday morning.
Booking records from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office show Spears — whose occupation was simply listed as “celebrity” — was booked into the county jail Thursday morning, and her car was towed. She was released a few hours later after being cited and given a court date in May.
Following her release, Britney is expected to appear in court on May 4 at 8:15 a.m. local time to address her charges. No further comment from her team has been issued at the time of writing.

This isn’t the first time the 44-year-old has had a brush with this kind of trouble. In 2007, she faced four misdemeanor charges and a jail sentence for an alleged hit-and-run with a parked car in Los Angeles.
And there were warning signs leading up to this. In October 2025, the “Toxic” singer gave a strange excuse as to why she was driving erratically — “If anyone is wondering the lookalike was not me…🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️🤓,” she wrote at the time.
Spears was seen swerving into other lanes after leaving the Red-O restaurant in Thousand Oaks, California. According to a video, she appeared to be “spiraling” as she got into her black BMW.

An insider was blunt about what’s been going on with Spears: “She’s acting out. She gets into these spirals and it just goes downhill fast,” they said, noting the singer had been having a “rough” time dealing with everything resurfacing.
The 2025 car incident happened shortly after Kevin Federline released his memoir, which reportedly “reopened old wounds” and put Britney “in a tailspin.”
What’s also worth noting here: Spears had reportedly just won a protective order against an alleged stalker when she was pulled over. So in the span of days, she went from a legal win to an arrest. That’s a jarring whiplash for anyone, let alone someone with her history.
In January, she wrote in a since-deleted Instagram post that she “will never perform in the U.S. again because of extremely sensitive reasons,” adding a softer note that she hoped to one day perform with her son in the UK and Australia.

And now, the silence has deepened. Her Instagram page has also vanished following the report that she was arrested.
Just one month before the arrest, Britney opened up about how her ongoing estrangement from her family was affecting her. “As people, all we really want is to feel connected to each other and never feel alone,” she wrote in a since-deleted Instagram post.
It’s hard not to read all of this — the deleted posts, the erratic driving, the deleted Instagram — as someone who is struggling in a very real, very visible way. We genuinely hope Britney gets the support she needs ahead of her May 4 court date.
