Celine Dion made a stunning comeback at the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony on Friday (July 26), following speculation about her return to performing.
The legendary singer delivered a moving performance of Édith Piaf’s “Hymne A L’Amour” from the illuminated Eiffel Tower, adorned with the Olympic rings. Dressed in an elegant white gown and accompanied by a piano, Dion showcased her flawless vocals as she sang the 1950 classic, which means “The Hymn of Love” in English.
This marked Dion’s first public performance since canceling her North American Courage world tour due to her battle with Stiff Person Syndrome, a rare neurological condition causing severe muscle spasms.
In her recent Prime Video documentary I Am: Celine Dion, the singer expressed her determination to perform again, saying: “If I can’t run, I’ll walk. If I can’t walk, I’ll crawl… I won’t stop.” Fans also spotted her earlier this week greeting admirers outside the Royal Monceau hotel near the Champs-Élysées in Paris.
This isn’t Dion’s first Olympic appearance. She previously sang “The Power of the Dream” at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics opening ceremony.
The Paris ceremony also featured the lighting of the Olympic cauldron after a months-long torch relay involving celebrities like Snoop Dogg, BTS’ Jin, and Pharrell Williams. Earlier that day, Lady Gaga performed a cabaret-style version of the French song “Mon Truc en Plume” (“My Thing With Feathers”) in an elaborate, choreographed routine.
