The legendary Canadian vocalist’s connection to the song competition runs deep, stretching back nearly four decades when she clinched victory—a moment that would also mark the beginning of a profound personal journey.
Céline claimed her Eurovision crown in 1988, performing for Switzerland with her song “Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi.”
That victorious evening held double significance for the star. It marked the start of her romantic relationship with René Angélil, her manager at the time, who would later become her husband and soulmate.
“It was in Dublin, on that unforgettable day of April 30, 1988, the evening of the Eurovision competition. He went back to my room with me… I was seated at the head of the bed, legs unfolded under the covers.”
“I was happy about being alone with the man I loved. And I had a very precise plan,” she wrote in her autobiography My Story, My Dream.
She told him: “You’ll be the first. And the only.” Their marriage followed six years later.
It’s no surprise that Céline is contemplating a Eurovision comeback. Following Switzerland’s 2024 victory—their first since her historic win—organizers are eager to secure her as the interval performer.
However, Céline’s potential Eurovision appearance hinges on her ongoing battle with Stiff Person Syndrome.
“We won’t know until a few weeks beforehand whether she feels fit enough,” producers Reto Peritz and Moritz Stadler confirmed.
Despite her health challenges, Celine managed to perform at the 2024 Olympics opening ceremony.
The Eurovision 2025 final is scheduled for Saturday, May 17, in Basel, Switzerland.
