After a long absence from the public eye, Céline Dion made a surprise appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards as a presenter. The beloved musician has been battling with stiff-person syndrome, a rare autoimmune neurological disease that causes muscle stiffness and painful spasms. Despite her condition, Dion delivered a heartwarming message to the audience about the love and joy that music brings to people all around the world.
As one of the biggest names in music, it was no surprise that Dion was surrounded by other talented artists at the ceremony. While backstage, she couldn't resist breaking into song with Sonyaé Elise, a singer and songwriter who shared a montage of Grammy Awards highlights on Instagram. The duo delivered a stunning a cappella performance, with Dion leading the way and trading lyrics with Elise.
During the ceremony, Dion presented Taylor Swift with Album of the Year, although some fans criticized Swift for not acknowledging the veteran musician while accepting the award. Despite the momentary tension, the pair was later photographed together backstage, dispelling any perceived disrespect.
Dion's last significant public appearance was in November, when she attended and sang at a hockey game between the Vegas Golden Knights and the Montreal Canadiens. Due to the unpredictability of her condition, the singer has had to cancel most of her recent live performances in Europe, explaining that touring can be very difficult even when she's 100% healthy. She's working hard to regain her strength, but she's not willing to compromise her health by returning to the stage until she's truly ready.
